By: G.Stryker: Twitter @SNStryker and Instagram @SNStryker SteelerNation.com Maurkice Pouncey*returned from the Covid-19 List.* The center of our line could use a boost against the Buffalo Bills defense! Robert Spillane (knee) and Joe Haden (concussion) missed practice all week, and will not play the game this weekend since both are listed as out. Chris Boswell […]

I know Haden is in the concussion protocol but why rule him out so early? Players have come out of the protocol on the day of a game before. This makes no sense to me unless they changed the rule or Haden had a really bad concussion, which it certainly didn't seem he did. The guy is a veteran and can certainly play with no practice.

He also had a dinged up knee. If he can't pass the tests they require to exit the concussion protocol then you sit him because the long term damage isn't worth him playing.

he probably hasn't progressed far enough in the concussion protocol to be eligible to play. It is a four or five step process. IIRC, one of them is getting through at least one full practice without showing symptoms. I would have to google that to be sure and I am too lazy right now.

I got you.

Return-to-Participation Process
After a concussion has occurred in practice or play, the concussed player must be examined and monitored in the training room on a daily basis or as decided by the medical staff. Components of the NFL Sideline Concussion Assessment can be utilized to check for symptoms as well as continue to monitor the other aspects of the examination. The following measures must occur in order for a player to return to play:

a. A player returns to baseline status of symptoms and neurologic exam, including cognitive and balance functions. Repeat neuropsychological evaluation is performed before return to practice or play with interpretation of the data by the team neuropsychology consultant. The team neuropsychology consultant reports the findings back to the team physician.

b. A graduated exercise challenge, followed by a gradual return to practice and play, is initiated when the player returns to baseline status. The RTP protocol following a concussion follows a stepwise process to be outlined in the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee’s Return to Participation Protocol.

c. Prior to return to practice or play, not only must the team physician clear the player, but the Independent Neurological Consultant with expertise in concussion must also evaluate and clear the player for return to practice and play.

d. A player may be considered for return to practice and play only after the player has returned to baseline status with rest and exertion, has repeat neuropsychological testing which is interpreted by the team neuropsychology consultant as back to baseline levels of functioning, and has completed the Return to Participation Protocol referenced above and is cleared by the Team Physician and the Independent Neurological Consultant.

I'm pretty sure you are right Hoot, but then again aren't you always....................(j/k)

If it's SUTTON next man up, he will hold down the fort no problem.

Salute the nation

Got it. I knew there had to be something as I know other players definitely came out of the protocol the day before and even the day of a game.

Protocol is a 3 day process that requires 2 practices to clear. He didn't practice today, so he doesn't have 2 practices to clear.

He can rest all he needs, nothing is worse than chronic concussion syndrome.

Yes...its likely he wasn’t going to clear.. besides, its always silly to try to rush guys back for a regular season matchup and lose them long term because of it... Worse case scenario is we get knocked out of the top seed... but honestly the cb position is the deepest on the d right now....

This going to be a rough game with so many defensive starters out. really gotta believe in next an up

Sutton wants to be a starter? You have your opportunity to show you deserve a shot at it. Ditto for playing time with the makeshift ILBer crew. Little disappointed they didn't look at bringing in a ILBer from a PS somewhere.

That and our offense has to play to win, not play not to lose. Come out with guns blazing for 60 minutes. At least 2/3 of the time go no-huddle. Diontae may need to be the 4th WR in with his drops. Send a message. Claypool and JuJu should get most of the plays with Washington close behind. Then, you can bring in Johnson. I'd also throw a few more passes to McDonald instead of Ebron. It'd be nice if we could run the ball a little but unless we start throwing more than 10 yards down the field, they will keep all the men up near the line and we will have no run game once again.

Anyone else reading the articles saying many in the Steelers organization are concerned about Ben's knee? I knew he injured a few games ago but I know it didn't seem to be bothering him at all last week unless I missed it. Anyone in the know hear anything or are concerned?
