Joe Starkey reports that when Troy was playing the team had a players panel where if guys were for instance late for meetings, they would take it up with that player.
The story has it that Ben had been late for meetings and Tomlin was told by Troy they were going to confront him. Story has it that Tomlin tipped off Ben and that pissed off the panel of players which included Troy, Big Snack, Ike and others.
Supposedly the players felt like Tomlin broke their trust and Troy supposedly said he will never attend a Steeler function as long as Tomlin is HC.
Also, Tomlin supposedly told Troy he was no longer in the Steelers plans by phone rather than in person.
I’m just quoting Joe Starkey.

Again, I don’t know the validity of this story but that’s what he said. He did mention the source a writer but sorry I can’t remember his name.
Coryea listens to 93.7 The Fan so maybe he caught it.

While I would agree that Tomlin should have stayed out of any such player arrangement, that is a really small reason to disassociate yourself from the team. Honestly, that is a pretty childish grudge to carry for years.

Reality is, Troy is upset about the way he was let go. I don't blame him on that front. For all he did for the team; as great a player and teammate as he was, they should have talked to him in person.

If you as a coach need a player panel to handle discipline issues on your team, maybe you need to re-evaluate your line of work. So was it the player panel that should have handled AB as well? Seems like the panel doesn't work for ****. Seems like everything with Tomlin is a matter of passing the buck and shifting the responsibility or blame onto other people. It almost seems as though he hides behind others to shield himself. It has been widely reported that this is HIS defense that the Steelers are running. Well if that is the case, why do you need Butler as a DC. So when it gets exposed again, you can fire another coach and absolve yourself of any responsibility. Porter was the scapegoat after last season, Butler will probably be fired after this season, so he just bought himself 3 years of job security by hiding behind his coaches. He continually blames execution over scheme yet the scheme is never adjusted for the level of execution. He says the team was unprepared for the Patriots but apparently that is not his responsibility either. He blamed the "environment" for not using a FB of 3rd/4th and 1. He stated the flow of the game is why he left Dobbs in at Oakland and left his franchise QB on the sideline that ultimately cost us a playoff spot. One excuse and one scapegoat at a time packaged with a Thesaurus and gibberish the likes of which the NFL may never see again.

I knew that Ben was tied to Tomlin and vice versa. When one goes, the other will follow. You can't blame HCMT for wanting to keep his HOF QB happy, as he goes as far as his QB goes, can we?

And I can only assume he wasn't as fond of Troy and some of the old guard as they were 'Cowher' guys. (Yes, Ben was drafted by Cowher, but that was near the end and it's no secret that Cowher was luke-warm at best on the pick.

If it doesn't make sense, it's not true. Completely dumb reason for mild mannered Troy to go scorched earth.

Ron Cook has been around the Steelers since forever and said he never heard anything about Ben being late for meetings. In his early years maybe the first one out of the building after practice, but not late to be there.

I read this story and it also said MT left message for Troy on voicemail telling him he would be cut if he didn’t retire. I took it that THAT was the cause for Troy’s resentment.

yes. that is what I have always assumed...he is upset about the way he was handled at the end. That is what I was trying to say above (although not particularly clearly)...the player meeting thing would be a childish grudge. I don't see that in Troy.

More op ed writer commentary without documented sources. All hearsay. Troy also apparently commented at one time what a Captain was...”someone who says heads or tails during the coin flip”. Don’t believe that either.

Truthfully IMO Troy always said his faith was more important to him than anything else, then his family. Mr. Rooney loved Troy for that. Media jump starters always tried the angle that Troy wasn’t being “a leader enough”. Of which there was no proof of that either by players.

Thing is if Troy was so down on the franchise, why does he have a Steeler lapel on his suit in his new commercial?

If anything all of this is more media posturing to have something since there is no more AB or Bell antics.

All I know is I was fortunate enough to meet Troy at Disneyland a few years ago. He was a super nice guy and took 3 minutes to talk and thanks me for the support.

Life away from football is still important to some people.

I don't care about these type of stories because nobody really knows. My issue with Tomlin is far deeper than some spat over meeting times. Ben is tied to Tomlin because he doesn't want to re-learn a new offense. My issue is I don't really care what Ben wants. I want to win titles not keep players and coaches happy. Ben didn't want BA fired either but without that he's probably in a hospital mumbling to himself. Ben's a great QB but he doesn't always know what is best. Now with his buddy at OC the offense sucks balls. I'd rather him learn a new offense than Tomlin stick around 3 more years to get this pile of excrement that we have now.

Yeah, true. But anybody believing that the Steelers players are satisfied with Coach Dumpster is living in a fantasy world.

Troy also apparently commented at one time what a Captain was...”someone who says heads or tails during the coin flip”.

Actually, as I remember it, Troy was asked who the best captains are and he responded, "The ones who call the coin toss during the Super Bowl."

In other words, captains for the best teams. To Troy, winning was all that mattered. For him, personal stats, interceptions, etc. did not matter for a thing unless those numbers led to wins.

And that's only one reason why he personifies a perfect example of a Steeler Football player to me
