Very interesting analysis here. This might be the answer to why he had such a terrible TD to pick ratio at Pitt until his last year. It rears it's ugly head again in his Steeler rookie campaign. I believe he will turn it around.

Interesting video. There are some glaring fundamental mistakes in Pickett's reads, but nothing that shouldn't be fixable with a little more experience. Also, it gives a different perspective for me on Canada's offense -- a lot of open receivers are eventually running free on these plays, and not being located by the quarterback. Hard to say exactly who's to blame on any particular play, but maybe Canada isn't as bad as we thought.

I would, however, take the KP's poor numbers against zone with a grain of salt. Advanced metrics at playerprofiler.com had Mac Jones #1 in the NFL in 2021 against zone coverage. Last year, he was 31st. Most NFL defensive coordinators make the necessary adjustments; the Steelers and Pickett will have to do the same to get better this season.

The five dollar answer? I dunno we have to wait and see. He can advance, stay the same, or slump. I would bet on him improving across the board. He should have a better O-line, and feel a little more comfy with what he is seeing in the field. He just has to transfer that into performance.

I 100% agree that zone is the weakness of Kenny Pickett currently. In college he probably 95% cover 2 or cover 3 when teams played zone. Now he has to deal with those plus 5, and split, and trips, and cloud, and banjo and robber. There's a lot more to decipher in the NFL. I would say that is almost always the biggest adjustment is the speed of the NFL and having to decipher all these new coverages so quickly. He is good vs man and cover 1, 2 and 3. I think Canada actually did a good job the second half of the season getting Pickett to check down and not throw into those coverages as much. Thus, the significant decrease in picks. Now a season under his belt and an offseason to study film should have improved his presnap read ability and should have increased his understanding of the different nuances of the zone packages. How much is the $64,000 question. But from all accounts it seems like Pickett is a hard worker and loves to study film. Those attributes should help his chances of overcoming the deficiencies in his game.

Let's just pray it doesn't take FIVE years...

I want to see Pickett improve his pocket presence. One of his biggest weaknesses in college was scrambling himself into pressure. You'd like to see him climb the pocket more and not depend on getting outside. I think we'll see growth here not only with his own game, but also the design of the offense.

Kenny Pickett of the @steelers is the first rookie in NFL history to have a game-winning TD pass in the final minute of the 4th quarter in back-to-back games.

It's a start.

AND so it begins…………………..

Salute the nation

That is indeed an interesting and well-documented video. I will point out that the biggest problem Pickett seemed to have with zone is trusting his blocking, staying in the pocket and letting the receivers get open.

The improved blocking this season is a potential cure, as is Pickett maturing and understanding he needs to stay in a clean pocket and step up.
