INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who had led the team since 1997 and presided over one of the storied franchise's greatest eras, died Wednesday. He was 65.

"We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon," Colts chief operating officer Pete Ward said in a statement released by the team. "Jim's dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed."

Condolences to the Family and his friends.

He seemed like a good owner and pretty positive sort of guy.

GOD Speed

Salute the nation

condolences to the family, organization, and his close network of friends. Why was he asleep in the afternoon? Did he die while napping? Sorry, just seems like an odd circumstance to die whilst asleep at dinner time.

It’s pretty well known around here that he was a junkie. Paramedics have had to give him Narcan before. He had his demons but people say he was a nice guy. I don’t know because I hate the Colts and idgaf. I would not be surprised if it was an OD.

The shameless article in the PPG begins with “Jim Irsay started his football career as a ball boy. He finished it as a team owner.”

No, he started his football career as the son of the team owner.

From ball boy to owner. What a climb.

Or liver failure.

Thanks, I just read an ESPN article about him and his addictions. Sounds like he was indeed a nice guy and very charitable and giving of his time. His tormented soul is now at rest.

Sad... but my first thought. I knew he had a history of drugs. For the family's sake, hope it was not related.

Sure looked older than 65.

I'm a newbie to all of this. I never even heard of Narcan before looking it up. I'm surprised he was so young, relatively. I heard some whispers of substance abuse. I guess it was more than drinking. He ran a decent team, 6th most winning in his tenure is what I heard.

I thought he was more in Jerry Jones territory by the looks of him - 80-ish.

True. I walked into a restaurant once a couple minutes after Irsay had left. The bartender told me that he threw down 15 Jack & Cokes in less than 2 hours.

When I hear stories like that it makes me feel better about my drinking. Or when I watch a movie about a junkie, like Bad Lieutenant.

Which reminds me, Harvey Keitel is also a better actor than Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise.

Was gonna say, all the years of being a druggie caught up with him. Only Keith Richards is immune.

His 3 daughters are running the team now, on a rotational basis. I wonder if the 3 daughters end up being able to better run a team better than Art, Clown-lin and Kahn. We shall soon see. All they have to do now is win a playoff game. Even the Browns have outdone us there.
