JJ Watt Sends Pizza to Local Cops & Firefighters, But It’s His Touching Letter that Really Delivers

It seems that few athletes are as beloved as J.J. Watt these days. On the field, Watt is loved by his fans and teammates and feared and respected by his opponents. Off the field, the Texans defensive end is known as a generous man of character.

Whether it’s helping his team win a game or performing charity work, Watt gives 110 percent. So it’s not surprising that when the Houston Texans honored the U.S. military on Sunday with their annual Salute to Service, Watt took it upon himself to do a little more.

The Texans superstar wanted to make sure the local police and fire departments knew they were appreciated as well. He sent them pizzas from Papa John’s and added a personal touch by attaching this letter:

“I just wanted to send y’all a small token of my appreciation for everything you do. My dad & uncle were both firefighters, so I spent a lot of time around the firehouse when I was younger and gained a great deal of respect for both firefighters & the police force along the way. Y’all show up day in & day out, never knowing what the day might hold and never getting enough thanks for what you do. Yet, you still continue to put others before yourselves and save lives because of it. As athletes, we often get the headlines and big crowds, but just like the men & women of our military, y’all are the ones who truly deserve the credit, appreciation & admiration. I know it’s not much, but please enjoy lunch on me today. Thank you for all that you do!”
A few officers and firefighters posted to Twitter expressing gratitude for Watt’s gesture.....

Ummm, he'd make a great _any_ NFL team player, so what's the point?

I think the point is that is not a ********, like Stonetonio, Blount, Marshawn, Hernandez, etc. Just a guy that wants to give back a little. Like he said, it isn't much but it is something. Little acts like this are what make the world a little better place.

I agree, but do you think Pgh has a higher % of good guy players like this than other cities? I don't. I know the Rooneys would like to sell this notion, but I don't think it's true. When push comes to shove, they sign thugs if they think they can play. And why do you put Beast Mode on your bad guy list? Because he suffers from agoraphobia? Yea, he doesn't speak very good "white man" speak, but that shouldn't be an indictment on the guy.

I don't think I said that. My point is that I wish we had more good guys like JJ Watt, I really don't care about other teams.

Good story, quit trolling, POP

JJ Watt appears to have a lot of class and respect for people and the game we love. Love to have that in our team.

I'll add to that he is a fantastic defensive lineman and would easily be our best if he were here.

Thanks for the POST Stoney, always good to hear of these kind of stories. We hear enough "BAD" **** to last a life time, in just hours. This comes along and whaoLa we got some good reading. I too, think he'd be great for our team, in more ways than just a player. That POP guy needs to smile and read the story and think about it a little........

Salute the nation

Uh-huh. And you are........?

Plus.......he's Batman.

There are plenty of good guys in the league, and on this team. The knuckleheads just get all the ink.

Guys you never hear bad stuff about:

Troy
Ike
DeCastro
Timmons
Worilds
The Beard
Heath
Beachum
Foster
Gay
Heyward
McLendon

These are just guys who have been here long term. You could have added guys like Ryan Clark, and Larry Foote to the list last year. You hear about Watt because he's a megastar. No one cares when a William Gay does a good deed. The majority of guys in the league are decent folks. Even most of the knuckleheads have charities and such that they work with. The press just takes every incident, and blows it up to the point where it looks like the entire league is nothing but a bunch of outlaws.

Cool story. Watt seems like a genuinely decent person.

Can you imagine Watt on one side, Heyward on the other, and Big Dan in the middle? Heyward and Watt both have that non-stop effort and intensity that makes them a better player. Offensive lineman would face a rough day.

I've always felt that JJ Watt was Aaron Smith 2.0. Watt definitely has the bigger stats and I'm sure is a better player. But when you have that player who is selfless, never stop motor, never quit attitude it's just so much easier to win tough games. How many close games ended with an Aaron Smith sack, pressure or batted down pass.

Ben purchases a k9 for the city the steelers play in during away games or something along those lines

I would have to agree with this as well, although a lot of his stats are because he is featured in that defense which is different than the way the Steelers defense works. That is not to diminish him in any way just that there are different duties between the defenses.

One of the good deeds from William Gay is his involvement with the prevention of domestic violence movement. He does lots of things for them for obvious reasons and just recently was in the news for it, you could read about it on Steelers .com

It would be awesome to have Watt in a Steelers uniform. Too bad the Texans have him under contract for a bunch of years and a bazillion dollars.

We need a Kevin Greene type free agent.

dont forget Farrior, Kimo, Hampton, Ward, Randle El,, hell we can put that the whole xl sb team on the list.

After that draft I read that the Steelers were exploring ways to move up and get Watt but couldn't pull off the move.

Well in hindsight here is our 2011 draft class:

1 (31): Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State

2 (63): Marcus Gilbert, OT, Florida

3 (95): Curtis Brown, CB, Texas

4 (128): Cortez Allen, CB, The Citadel

5 (162): Chris Carter, OLB, Fresno State

6 (196): Keith Williams, OL, Nebraska

7 (232): Baron Batch, RB, Texas Tech

Is there anyone who would not have traded our top 5 picks for JJ Watt at this point. We only have 3 of the guys in the top five still on the team, Cortez is not doing well so far. Heyward is good, not great Gilbert is OK not good and we did not keep the other two. At this point is Watt worth more than Heyward and Gilbert and Allen combined, I think so.

But that is the thing about hindsight it is 20-20 unless you believe one of those professional athletes that says it is 50-50.
