Just wondering what kind of offensive coach this kid could be. He was always trusted by Ben. Bright kid, knows the game. Makes me wonder if you were the Steelers, would you bring him on board to start grooming him to be an offensive coordinator?

Nothing against Josh Dobbs, love the kid, but I want a true blue bonafide OC who doesn't need any training. One that can step in and actually do a great JOB without needing time to get up to speed. Our CURRENT OC had little experience and look where that is getting us.

I understand you said GROOM him, that would solely depend on who our expert OC was because if you are meaning totallage under O'Canada then you are ****-ing nuts.

Good day SIR............................. lol

I mean Dobbs isn’t even done playing yet… a player making league minimum makes 750k a season while an assistant position coach might make 150k… so he’d have to be out of playing options first

Then he would have to do a camp internship somewhere for a season or two… then he’d be an assistant position coach for a couple seasons and then be a position coach for a bit and slowly work in coordinator experience… before he’d get a job there… if he was interested and done playing, fine, start the clock.. but this is a solution five to six years away… not next year… its totally plausible if thats his interests… but its like my pie in the sky idea of offering an offensive assistant job to Peyton Manning… its not going to immediately translate into an OC overnight

at worst, bring him in as Assistant QB coach. Ben trusted him and looked to him for evaluating what the defense was doing. kid is super bright (obviously) and analytical (obviously, part 2). if he can parlay that into coaching, hell yes. then tomlin can promote from within.

1. Is he done playing?
2. Does he even WANT to coach?

Until these two questions have answers its jut moot speculation. Not that there is anything wrong with that . . .

I'm guessing that Dobbs is one of those guys whose God-given talents (in math, physics, etc) take second place to his love for football. Otherwise, why linger in a league knowing you'll never get a chance to be nothing more than a backup? He must really love football.... so, yes, if given the chance, he should (sooner rather than later) grab an asst coach or intern job and get on w/his "life's work".

BTW, we have Dobbs to thank for Minkah. IIRC, we used the 5th we got from Jax for him to then trade to Miami for Fitzpatrick. So thanks, Josh!

Well if someone asked me if I was willing to take 500k to not get hit and hang out and be treated as an NFL player.......I think I would do it.

he'd make more money being a coach than he would being a rocket surgeon

First, I wouldn't offer Dobbs a coaching job. However, the Colts just hired a guy who's only coaching experience was at the high school level as head coach. If they can do that, I don't think a guy like Dobbs needs 5-6 years before joining the coaching ranks, particularly as an offensive assistant as originally suggested.

Im just laying out the typical protocol for this stuff… the Steelers could hire a hobo from under any overpass to do it if they wanted… kind of like the Colts just did, but usually there is a path that guys take

Right and I think that was the original suggestion of the post. Bring him onto the staff as on offensive assistant to eventually groom him as an offensive coordinator. A guy like Larry Foote was an assistant linebackers coach the year after retiring, so I think guys can make a quick jump into coaching. Dobbs would obviously be there as a general offensive assistant or assistant quarterbacks coach. I wouldn't make the move because the last thing this team does is develop young coaches into future coordinator/head coach roles. They don't even get established coaches promotions.

When he's done playing I'd talk to him about being an offensive assistant and/or QB coach.

So, you're saying I have a chance................................

What's the difference between Dobbs and Leftwich??? I really want to see where this conversation goes...

Leftwich followed that path I was saying earlier… he was a coaching intern but jumped right into QB coach the next season… after a year and a half the card’s fired their OC and he finished the season as interim OC but wasn’t retained in the offseason…

In that offseason, Arians brought him in as the named OC in Tampa, but still called the plays at first… he turned the offense over to Lefty after a couple seasons though… so it was probably about five years between intern to actually playcalling for him… that seems about a normal timeframe.

This is what I was thinking about when I read about Dobbs being cut.
