The Pittsburgh Steelers are still very much in the market for a safety, and a wide receiver even though they’ve been uncharacteristically busy in free agency. The Steelers will likely draft a wide receiver early in the NFL Draft as they’ve found great success by doing so. Drafting secondary on the other hand hasn’t come as easy to Kevin Colbert, and Mike Tomlin over the years. Their failures have mainly featured busted cornerbacks, but every once in awhile they’ve struck out on safeties. Sean Davis surely comes to everyone’s mind.
Terrell Edmunds also probably comes to mind. Edmunds was a product of being over drafted. While some will always consider him a bust, the fact of the matter is that he shouldn’t of been selected so high to begin with. The Steelers reached for him in the first round and set expectations for him amongst the fan base, and organization that he just couldn’t fulfill. That isn’t to say Edmunds hasn’t been a serviceable player, because he has. He’s always available, and as Tomlin always says that’s the main thing a player can offer.
The Steelers decided to not pick up Edmunds fifth-year option prior to last season, and they reportedly are monitoring his situation as he tests the free agent market. There hasn’t been any reports of him speaking to any teams, so it’s likely he’s going to be available for awhile. The Steelers have been reportedly interested in a few safeties. On Monday Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu mentioned on a podcast that Tomlin had called him in an effort to express interest. They’ve also been linked to Damontae Kazee, the former first round pick, of Atlanta.
The name that no one seems to be talking about is Ronnie Harrison . Harrison was a third round selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018, and started 22 games for the Jaguars in his two seasons there. Harrison was traded to the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2020 season for a fifth round draft pick. Last season Harrison started 11 of the 12 games he played in before missing the final 5 weeks of the season with an injury.
Now the intriguing part of Harrison is that he played at Alabama with Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Levi Wallace. Playing opposite of Fitzpatrick in 2016, and 2017, Harrison had 5 interceptions, 11 pass break ups, and 99 tackles. Fitzpatrick had 7 interceptions (6 in 2016) and 14 pass break ups during that time. In 2017 they combined for 12.5 tackles for a loss.
Harrison met Tomlin during the draft process in 2017 and in the Steelers loss to Cleveland in 2021 he had some words for Tomlin.
The Steelers are going to be the likely winner when it comes to finding a safety. Worst case scenario is they bring back Edmunds. He isn’t going to hurt them. If he decides to go elsewhere while they wait on Mathieu to find a home then they can look to Harrison.
