Another week before the draft, another mock draft. We here at SteelerNation.com have been rolling out different variations of how the Pittsburgh Steelers may approach the 2022 NFL Draft and we’ve seen multiple national news outlets do the same for every team. This gives us a chance to explore hypothetical trades and how the Steelers’ agenda compares to other teams who have the same needs in the first round of the draft.

On Friday, Tom Fornelli with CBS Sports unveiled his first-round mock draft for all 32 selections; and boy are they interesting. So, what direction does Fornelli see the Steelers going with their first pick?

With the 10th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Malik Willis, quarterback, Liberty.

That’s right; Fornelli predicted the Steelers to trade up to the 10th spot with the New York Jets to land Willis with their first pick. His reasoning is:

There’s been a lot of smoke about Pittsburgh’s affinity for Malik Willis, and in this mock, it moves up to make sure any of the other teams in the market for a QB can’t get him. Willis is the kind of QB lottery ticket who can pay huge dividends, as he’s got a ceiling the others in this class don’t.

I’ll be honest, I do not see the Steelers handling their 20th overall selection in this fashion. I’ve consistently made the argument that the Steelers should not only trade up for, but draft any of the quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. I’m anticipating the Steelers making a splash signing with a proven veteran quarterback by way of trade before the draft for a Russell Wilson, Jimmy Garoppolo, or Carson Wentz caliber player.

So, who would I have preferred at the 20th spot in this specific mock draft? After looking at the other players who would’ve hypothetically been available to the Steelers, I like offensive linemen Tyler Linderbaum or Kenyon Green, or even beef up the defense with linebacker Devin Lloyd or defensive tackle Jordan Davis. Any of those prospects would propel the Steelers forward over Willis.

Some other surprises Fornelli had in his mock were the Carolina Panthers selecting quarterback Kenny Pickett with the 6th selection, the New Orleans Saints selecting quarterback Desmond Ridder at the 18th spot, and the Detroit Lions using their traded-for 32nd spot on quarterback Carson Strong. All-in-all, Fornelli sees there being four quarterbacks selected in the first round.

You can check out the full draft HERE.

How do you think Fornelli did with this mock draft? Do you think the Steelers should trade up for a quarterback? Let us know in the comments!

This gives us a rare hindsight. Willis a trade up when we could have had Linder or Williams standing pat. I would have to tell ol girl to take Steele over next door so both my girls didn't have to hear me yell and cuss and throw dog toys wherever they may fall. Not just no but helllll no.

Where is Fornelli getting his doobage from because it is mighty strong? No trading up. Stand pat at 20 take Penning, Green, Lindenbaum, or whatever OL falls.

I don't see them doing this, even at 20. Colbert recently said the most important aspect when evaluating a QB is accuracy, a weakness for Willis.

Draft someone that will anchor the o-line for the next 10 years.

There is not a QB in this draft worth us trading up for. If one they love is there at 20, then you can think about taking him but they have to really be sold he can be the face of the franchise for the next 10 to 15 years. We need all of our picks this year. If they want to trade up in a draft, think about it next year or the year after.

I totally hear yaz and keep in mind that LAST draft he had that very opportunity and passed on it. Nothing would surprise me here but I most certainly hope we don't trade up and use draft capital that is needed badly else where.

Salute the nation

I didn’t want to admit what I knew at the time, but 2020 was the last ride , the last “real” chance for the Steelers in the Ben era.

They had the easier schedule, right mix of veterans and youth, and they really were on the way until the injuries caught up with & decimated their season.

The Banner ACL, Bush was playing at a different level before his ACL, and the slew that happened after the pushed back Baltimore game. They were so finding their stride and while might have still lost to Buffalo, the would not have lost to Washington & been 12-0. Probably at worst finishing 14-2.

Point is, the team doesn’t need a full rebuild but #1 it does need to evaluate what younger players are going to be part of future, and there are a ton still in that 1st contract and #2 it needs to an influx of talent across the board. It’s not that dissimilar from a 1999-2000 Steelers point.

If a QB that was good was there, you get him. But I’d rather get the best possible football players & just get them on roster fill holes with FA,

Get aggressive with the QB when you can get him on the rookie deal & have a stacked team that makes a run at it. But don’t draft a project please

I would opine that there is a far greater chance PIT trading down and getting extra picks, as they did with Big Snack than reaching for a QB. If who ever they have their eye on is there at 20 or is sliding down the boards, I would expect Kevin to be pretty shrewd in task.

Trading down is actually a decent option if that value at need jumps off before 20.

I guess free agency will dictate but I would be shocked if they plugged all the holes by that route even with extra money to spend. If a certain WR or T isn't there that I think would be a smart move to get another pick to try to help plug those leaks.

We always talk about trading down but it's not as easy as you think and we almost never do so I wouldn't expect it this year. If they were going to move anywhere, my guess is they will piss us all off and move up to get a QB even though not a single QB in this class would have been in the 1st round the last 2 years.

I don't see that for multiple reasons. Art is already on record saying they will be bringing in a QB. The team has more holes and less draft picks. Just wouldn't make sense for that approach.

IMO the worst thing the Steelers could do is trade up for a QB this year. There are no Rnd 1 or franchise QBs in this draft. I say trade back in the first build OL CB SS MLB. I still think Strong or Ridder will be around if you if really need to draft one and much better value.

Hammer met nail.

PIT could go FA and get a solid vet at C, Ben Jones. Heck, even go younger with Nick Martin or Karras. I wouldn't be surprised if they went after Ifedi at OT either. If Colbert signs a OL, Witherspoon or Haden at CB, restructures Schobert and find a WR in FA. If Davis is gone, a trade down to get a extra 3rd, still gives an opportunity to get Travis Jones out of UConn and then get a DB/LB or WR with your next 3 picks.
