It seems like everyday in recent weeks, there’s a new mock draft to talk about. Figuring out who the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to take in round 1 of the 2022 NFL Draft has been pretty difficult to say the least.

The team has been making the rounds to various Pro Days over the last couple of days, and will be continuing to do so over the next couple of weeks. They are going to be doing their due diligence since this is the first time in 18 years they are looking for a new starting quarterback.

However, with the signing of Mitch Trubisky, who some of Steeler Nation believe could become the Steelers’ next franchise QB, it leaves many with the belief that they won’t be selecting one this year.

That includes NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who posted his most recent mock draft Tuesday afternoon.

In his mock draft, he had the Steelers selecting one of the premier defensive backs in Derek Stingley Jr. out of LSU. Here is what Jeremiah had to say about the pick:

“This would be a fun fit in the Steelers’ secondary. When healthy and dialed in, Stingley is a top-five talent in this class.”

Jeremiah is correct in what he says. Having someone of Stingley’s talent would be an amazing addition to a Steelers secondary that is lacking a clear #1 cornerback at this point.

When mocking Stingley to the Steelers at the 20th overall selection, Jeremiah had them passing on Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. Liberty’s Pro Day happened yesterday, and Willis’ performance during it had everyone drooling over his potential with him completing beautiful deep ball after deep ball while putting his mobility on full display.

In addition to being in attendance for Liberty’s Pro Day to witness Willis’ performance, Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin took Willis out to dinner the night before. This allowed him to have private conversations with the potential first round draft pick in a more casual setting.

Now, even though the selection of Stingley would likely be a great one for the Steelers due to his talent and the team’s positional needs, all of the arrows are currently pointing towards Willis being the pick if he is available at 20th overall.

However, Jeremiah didn’t just have the Steelers passing on Willis at the 20th overall pick, he had Willis not being selected with any of the first 32 picks of the draft. In such a quarterback thirsty league, it would be shocking for a quarterback with Willis’ upside not to be taken in the first round. He is still very raw and would be best served not being a day one starter in many people’s opinions, but the ceiling is incredibly high.

We do not know where Jeremiah would have Willis being selected as his mock draft only included the first 32 picks. Having him out of the first round however is something that very few people would agree with.

Let us know what you think of the idea of the Steelers passing on Willis, as well as them selecting a potential shutdown corner in Stingley in the comment section below!
