His support from Democrats in his own district was something like 20%.

I guess he felt like maybe he can pull a few Dems with name recognition and get all the people that will pull the (R) lever in 2020 and hope that's enough to win vs. an unknown challenger.

Southern New Jersey's 2nd District is all the beaches (the "shore") plus a lot of very poor minorities and those struggling in Atlantic City. The money comes from wealthy retirees from PA/Philly and central Jersey/NYC. Not to mention a long history of corruption and the mob in gambling.
