Looks like there will be a 3rd QB available to teams this season.

Basically if both of your QBs get hurt a 3rd QB can come off the bench and play. I believe he doesn't need to have a game day hat just be on the roster.

(You can't pull him off the practice squad)

(The Rudy the Red Nosed third stringers rejoice)

An "emergency" 3rd QB has always been available. You just have to dress him. I get why teams don't do it because the odds of losing your other two QB's in the same game are pretty slim and that game day spot is better used elsewhere. I like the idea because it allows the same flexibility of not dressing three QB's while having three guys ready for the game, but I hate the idea because it's your own fault you didn't dress three QB's. It's a chance you take. All of that said, I think you'll be able to count on one hand the number of times teams will have to use this rule over the next decade.

I like the tweak of the rule, if you are talented and have three capable QBs to be able to compete. As you have mentioned it doesn't happen often where you have to use it so it is nice teams don't have to force feed one active. A game for me is more enjoyable to watch with a QB at the helm on both sides of the ball.

How about the good old days when we had two WRs that could QB ? Randel El being the better of the two.

I like the 3rd QB and not counting a roster spot.

I don’t think they’d have done enough in the spirit of “Integrity” of the game. The schedule dictates the need of more roster spots.

The roster should be increased to 58 (game day) and salary cap increased by 10% to pay the additions.

As for the “Integrity” of the game, the cheatriots and their individuals, completely eliminated that aspect of relation to the game.

So for people who don’t remember, back in the start of the 90’s the active gameday roster was 45. The exact same scenario of a series of QB injuries wiped out a team and that was why the original emergency QB rule was adopted… then moron coaches in 2010 bitched and moaned about it because once tge emergency Qb went in, he couldn’t come back out
So the league gave them a 46th spot specifically for that emergency qb, but since they didn’t write that into the rules, coaches like BB used it for an extra special teams guy…

Now Rudy will have to learn how to hold a clipboard while wearing his equipment; new skills!

In NHL hockey, there is a rule where if the goaltender and the backup goaltender both are hurt and unable to return… the team may select anyone in attendance to finish the game for them. Smart teams pay a guy to travel with the team just in case… it came into play a couple years back in New York or New Jersey, i think…

Anyhow, in my opinion, besides the emergency qb… the nfl should let teams carry a super emergency four man taxi squad of guys paid no more than 2/3rds what practice squad guys get… who have extremely limited practice time… they should have to be a super emergency qb, P, K, and LS… guys who only really have to keep in shape and know the bare minimum to get a team to the end of the game in a crisis… the 3 special teamers because they are critical, yet not really used enough to eat a backup roster spot… and tge extra QB just because it is super critical… they don’t even have to travel with the team… just be there on gameday and watch from the stands unless called in …

Chicago did it a couple years ago. Dude was 36, never played above college and made like 14 saves. Won the game.

That's not how it works in the NHL. Each home team has a designated emergency back up goalie (EBUG), who is available to either team should they lose both goaltenders. The guy only gets paid if he's needed, and collects 500 dollars for his efforts.

Most of us remember how James Harrison worked out as a backup long snapper.
