On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers decision makers rolled into Baton Rouge, Louisiana to attend the LSU Pro Day. Included in this group was General Manager Kevin Colbert and Head Coach Mike Tomlin.

Each year, LSU produces NFL-caliber talent at various positions that makes all 32 teams pay close attention. Needless to say, the Steelers are going to have their eyes set on a few different prospects and even a “sweet” veteran in Tyrann Mathieu with whom they’ve been talking. With a lot of things happening today on the LSU campus, let’s take a look at players Colbert and Tomlin will be watching:

(Writer’s Note: As of Wednesday at 12:30 EST, there have not been any credible reports indicating a Tomlin/Colbert/Mathieu visit, but stay tuned throughout the day as we learn more.)

Steelers NFL Draft Prospect: Derek Stingley Jr., Cornerback, Projected 1st Round

There is no arguing the Steelers need top-level cornerback support in 2022. With Joe Haden presumably gone and Cam Sutton possibly moving back inside, this leaves an outside cornerback position somewhat up for grabs. Even though there is some welcomed relief with the free agency acquisition of Levi Wallace, there is not a lot of depth in the secondary. Stingley Jr. would fill that nicely. He’s a physical cornerback who isn’t afraid of contact and can play great press coverage. Mixed with his physicality is his athleticism and fluid motion. Stingley Jr. is able to swivel his hips to keep up with the receiver and maintain coverage. He also has great awareness for the ball and has elite ball skills. But where teams, including the Steelers, will evaluate him most is his recovery from his foot surgery.

In summer of 2021, he injured his left foot and tried to play through the pain, but only lasted 3 games of the 2021 season. He underwent a successful procedure early in October and his Pro Day will be his first ‘real’ workout since. Stingley Jr. will leave his Pro Day as either a solid first-round pick or a possible Day 2 selection. Early reports are that Stingley Jr. was able to run an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.37s!

Steelers NFL Draft Prospect: Cordale Flott, Cornerback, Projected 5th Round

Flott is another intriguing prospect for the Steelers at the cornerback position. The reason being that Flott is a nickelback/slot corner, which is where Sutton has had success, not to mention Tre Norwood and Arthur Maulet have also faired well at that similar role. Therefore the bulk of the Steelers’ interest in Flott will rely on whether or not they decide to move Sutton back inside or keep him outside in 2022. Watching Flott, he’s more of a developmental corner who will need to prove himself at his Pro Day. He has a big frame but is a bit undersized for a defensive back lining up in the box. But he has great ball skills and is physical enough at the line to knock receivers off their routes. He is also quick to diagnose run plays and can collapse on the ball carrier. But at his Pro Day, Flott will need to show he can keep up in man coverage and tackle the ball carrier. Both of these areas are not his strong suit, and Flott will need to show he can play up to a larger size to move his draft stock in the right direction.

Steelers NFL Draft Prospect: Ed Ingram, Guard, Projected 3rd Round

We are all well aware of the constant need of a deep, reliable offensive line in the AFC North. The Steelers were active in this area in free agency by signing center Mason Cole and offensive guard James Daniels, but they are most likely looking at bolstering the offensive line room through the draft as well. Ingram has a good shot of getting his name called later in the 2nd Day and the Steelers will have an early look at him at his Pro Day. Ingram is a massive body in the interior of the line with great upper body strength and strong hands. Not to mention, he’s great at pulling and is athletic for weighing in at over 300 pounds. Although he was a consistent anchor along the line at LSU, he’s not quite an NFL starter yet, but is looking to use his Pro Day to get him over that hump. For the Steelers, Ingram would be a solid reinforcer in the interior behind Kendrick Green, Cole, Daniels, Kevin Dotson, and maybe Joe Haeg. I should also note that Ingram missed some playing time in 2018 due to violating team rules, so he’ll need to show teams, including Tomlin and Colbert, that he’s a good person all around at his Pro Day.

Steelers NFL Draft Prospect: Ty Davis-Price, Running Back, Projected 5th Round

Davis-Price is coming off a relatively impressive combine performance as he rolls into his Pro Day. He is coming into the draft as one of the most physical, hard-hitting running backs available. Not to mention, he posted a 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the combine. He’s looking to show he’s the right blend of size (6’1”, 232 pounds), speed, and physicality that teams like. As a league comparison, he’s very similar to Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

For the Steelers, Davis-Price would be a nice change of pace or goal line running back behind Najee Harris. Davis-Price’s tape doesn’t necessarily scream ‘NFL starter’ currently, but that is what teams will be watching for at his Pro Day. As of Wednesday morning, he is set to meet with the Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans; no word yet on any time with the Steelers. But if the Steelers are serious in getting a solid, physical, north-to-south running back to pair with Harris, they’ll get a good look at Davis-Price on Wednesday. He currently sits as an early selection in the final day of the draft, but is looking to improve his draft stock at this Pro Day.

He’s there all the time in that make believe mock draft site. My finger presses click in record time.
If only.

Love your work Ben you and Matt.

Thanks for the write-ups.

Id rather these guys show speed on tape and actually run a 5.92 when they are in shorts and getting timed by all of God’s green earth… that trims the stupid teams with mediocre scouting departments out of the picture lol… im still pretty certain Mike brown of the Bengals drafts off of the recommendations of whatever the cheapest draft guide he bought says…

That was a lot funnier before the Steelers were obliterated by the Bungles twice in 2021.

Meh every blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again… it will be fine in two years when they ruined burrows with some cheap cost cutting bullcrap like trading chase for a bag of dimes before his next contract comes due or trying to make him play through some injury or some other bungly thing… that tiger cant change its stripes

A no brainer at 20. Unless Davis is there.

The Steelers have spent a lot of time looking at the top QBs and DBs in this draft.

beating the Steelers by a combined score of 65-20 and ending up in the big game? that's quite a nut for them to find 🙄
