Darqueze Dennard turning heads in Bengals camp

Early in Darqueze Dennard's first training camp, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport noted that the Cincinnati Bengals' first-round cornerback has shown better than advertised ball skills.

Coach Marvin Lewis raised the stakes on Thursday, crediting the former Michigan State star as "the best rookie corner I've seen," per Dan Hoard, the radio voice of the Bengals.

That's high praise considering two of Lewis' teams drafted first-round cornerbacks in back-to-back years.

As Ravens defensive coordinator, Lewis coached Duane Starks (No. 10 overall, 1998) and Chris McAlister (No. 10 overall, 1999). As Bengals head coach, he tutored a pair of decorated corners in Johnathan Joseph (No. 24, 2006) and Leon Hall (No. 18, 2007).

"If he stays on this path," veteran cornerback Terence Newman said of Dennard, via ESPN.com, "the sky's the limit for him."

The Bengals don't plan to start Dennard "right off the bat," according to Hoard, but he will see plenty of snaps in nickel and dime packages.

With two cornerbacks over age 30 (Newman and Adam Jones), another returning from a second Achilles surgery (Leon Hall) and a fourth who has yet to live up to his first-round pedigree (Dre Kirkpatrick), it's not a stretch to suggest Dennard could emerge as the best of the bunch by the end of his rookie season.

I don't know if he works out or not, but he is who I would have taken.

From the same mediocre head coach that agreed to pay Andy Dalton 115 million dollars,. Forgive me if I wipe my *** with his evaluations.

Say what you will about him as a HC, but Marvin knows defense. I'll take his word that kid will be a stud.

I like our pick...........

Lewis didn't say the best rookie cornerback ever, just the one he has seen. He was supposed to be the best cornerback in the draft and I liked him enough for the Steelers to draft him. He should develop into a good player.

Great thread with a predictable script. Start with posting something you know will stir up controversy (not quite trolling though). Then "he was my pick, the front office sucks, we haven't had a good draft in 20 years, etc." And before you know it, we're up to 120 pages in the thread, LOL. Is it too early for me to start making the popcorn?

I'm happy enough with what we got. I think the difference between what we got this year and what I wanted is much smaller than last year, although who I wanted last year didn't exactly set the league on fire last year either..

Lewis has the credibility to say what his opinion is of a certain player. He may not be liked as his team is in our division, but his ability to opinion his perception of a player, shouldn't be lost.
His approved player, still may not pan out or be better than our first rounder. I didn't see anywhere that Marvin indicated that. Just that some here, read something, then think its GOD like
material pro or con. I very much like our pick as it addresses a big need for us. Their CB situation appears to be even more desperate than ours, so thus the praise.

Actually I looked at it more as if he is good then we have to play against him twice a year but carry on.

You can't be dumb enough to think that any coach makes the decision on what to pay any player.

You can't be dumb enough to think that any team gives a QB 115 million without the coach approving of the player's talents. Of course we are talking about you.

Shazier appears to be a good pick but the issue is that it's tougher to find a great CB than a great ILB.

If you do not have a franchise QB and one is available and you pass, that's a mistake. It doesn't matter how good the other guy is, you had a chance for a franchise QB and didn't get him.

I think the same logic holds on defense for pass rushers and CBs. I understand that in Lebeau's system, he has been able to get by with lesser CBs, but the game is being changed to artificially favor the pass and i'm not sure you can just get by with mediocre CBs, at least not without a great pass rush.

That's why you draft Shazier, Shazier is simply the better pick for our system. in Lebeau's system it's doubtful Dennard would make a substantial impact and our pass rush up the middle would still be mediocre. Plus Shazier's speed enhances pass coverage against TE's and RB's.

I sure think it would be nice to have two first round picks. How about two high first round picks. I think the rog should announce that guys we have just reevaluated our position on things in the past and found the steelers were cheated out of games by spy gate, the botched non call that kept them out of the playoffs last year, unfairly loosing their qb for innuendo and accusations that may have been unfounded. Spending several seasons allowing other teams to hold James Harrison, assessing penalties that were unwarranted because the steelers hit too hard. Not calling penalties when they were committed against the steelers so we could keep the other teams in the game, and numerous other slights such as the six apologies we had to right for messing up games during their season.

In the interest of fairness and equality in the game of football we will allow the Steelers to select the first two players in the 2015 draft as well as their normal 1st round and all subsequent picks including compensatory picks in their normal positions. We at the league feel this would be adequate compensation for the past injustices.
Whadya think?

Better than average ball sills? Thought he was supposed to have the best "ball skills" in the draft....now it's a big surprise? Lewis is an *******.
