A volcanic field off the shore of Sicily, near Naples, has become active, scientists report.

The Campi Flegrei volcano is much larger than nearby Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano whose eruption destroyed the ancient city of Pompei. An eruption of this “supervolcano” could endanger much of Europe.

News of the volcanic activity was made public less than a week after the blood of St. Januarius failed to liquefy when displayed in the Naples cathedral.

Sicilians have long believed that when the miracle of St. Januarius does not occur, disaster will follow for the people of Naples.

OMG - just think of the carbon emissions!

It's a Sign

Get the Virgin sacrifices ready.

Volcanoes are political now?

Italians Alarmed as St. Januarius’ Blood Fails to Liquefy

According to legend, a woman collected the blood of Saint Januarius, or San Gennaro—the once pious bishop of Naples who was beheaded as Christianity was under attack around AD 305—and preserved it in a glass vial, reports Seeker.

Then a "blood miracle" in 1389: the congealed blood liquefied. The archbishop of Naples now performs this "blood miracle," shaking the vial in front of thousands until the blood liquefies, on three significant days each year, the most recent of which should have been Dec. 16.

(Mount Vesuvius erupted on that day in 1631, and Naples was said to have been protected by the saint.) And yet last week, it didn't. One website claims that when the blood miracle—which is "not quite sanctioned by the Catholic Church," per the Week—has failed to work, 22 epidemics, 19 earthquakes, four wars, and various other tragedies have followed.

I blame the heathens

If they spent the time and effort and money they do on global warming studies on alieviating pressure in fault lines and volcanos i bet the could prevent real preventable disasters thatcan have global implications...

Hmmm..
Most of you believe in the curse of the Terrible Towel....
.... but scoff at the idea that the blood of a Saint is relevant in preventing natural disasters....

Puny humans watch too many B movies on the sci-fi channel

Stop a volcano? send a nuke to stop an earthquake? ha ha

Only way to appease the volcano gods is the time honored virgin toss

wild stuff

sure to kill a lot of Muslims, so...rejoice.

and Italians.....who are just Arabs with good boats.

not seeing the problem here.

If the ones in question are radical jihadist sympathizers you can bet I would rejoice. I would worry about anyone in this country who wouldn't.

Your post is dumbassery.
Italians do not subscribe to the concept of jihad. Big difference.

That's a pretty ****** up statement...especially to those of us who are descendants of Italian immigrants or still have family and loved ones living in Italy...

One of the last times the miracle failed to occur was in 1980, the year a powerful earthquake shook Irpinia in Italy, leaving almost 2,500 people dead.

Another time the blood failed to liquefy was in 1939, just months before the outbreak of the Second World War.

But global warming is the reason this volcano exists.

This is a super volcano. Some serious ****.

Yellowstone is a super volcano. It erupts every 700,000 yrs and is overdue.

The United States is screwed should this thing ever erupt...even more screwed than if Hillary had won the presidency. Ash blankets much the country. Has a 20 mile wide, 50 mile long magma chamber, going miles below the earths surface. Ash cloud remains for weeks, food and water supply ****** up, planes cant fly.

Zero indicators that it will blow in our lifetimes so we can relax.

So far the two Italian news pages I read, one is in English, haven't mentioned it. Maybe they're not that worried,

Sounds like... Pompeii

Maybe they will get one of these predictions right for a change, a miracle in itself

Europe's Most Dangerous Supervolcano Is Reawakening Just In Time For Christmas

An international team of geoscientists have monitored the volcano's caldera for signs of activity and recently published results in the journal Nature Communications on the increased danger of an eruption.

Campi Flegrei, which means "burning fields" in Italian, is believed to have formed hundreds of thousands of years ago and has erupted on several occasions in recent geologic time. The initial eruption, which occurred 200,000 years ago triggered a "volcanic winter" from the massive amount of ash ejected into the atmosphere. The volcano then erupted again 40,000 and 12,000 years ago. The eruption 40,000 years ago is thought to have wiped out most of the European Neanderthals and was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of all time. In recent memory, Campi Flegrei erupted in 1538 for 8 days straight, sending ash across Europe and forming the new mountain Monte Nuovo.
