I’m really concerned about our TE position. Especially since McDonald is constantly injured. Grimble is decent but we have only seen him limited fashion. (He did have a huge fumble last year.) Then we draft a guy in the 5th with great height but is a below par blocker and slow. Would love to see them at some point bring in someone who could at least back up McDonald. Maybe lure Miller out of retirement? (I kid)

Here's your list of available TEs. I left Gronk off the list since he's retarded. I mean, retired. Listed by name, age and last team played for. I highlighted who we should bring in, as they cannot be worse than Grumble. I mean, fumble. I mean, Grimble.

Jermaine Gresham - 31 - ARI
Dion Sims - 28 - CHI
Antonio Gates - 39 - LAC
Lance Kendricks - 31 - GB
Benjamin Watson - 38 - NO
Michael Hoomanawanui - 31 - NO
Levine Toilolo - 28 - DET
Maxx Williams - 25 - BAL
MarQueis Gray - 29 - MIA
John Phillips - 32 - ARI
Jerome Cunningham - 28 - DET
Matt Lengel - 28 - CIN
A.J. Derby - 27 - MIA
Brian Parker - 27 - DEN
Alex Ellis - 26 - KC
Alan Cross - 26 - TB
Jake McGee - 27 - PIT
Josiah Price - 27 - MIN
Henry Krieger-Coble - 27 - LAR
Erik Swoope - 27 - IND

Vance played in 15 games last year (2018) caught 50passes for 600+ yards, pretty solid numbers. Injury is a part of the game but he has beefed up to counter that. Not every position can have starter back ups and I too wish we had superstars at every position. Our new rookie is near a mirror of the Outlaw so there is that. Who Ride.............................WE RIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot about Jake McGee, I hope he sticks.

But yes, we should bring in a guy like Maxx Williams because Gentry is gonna take time to develop IMO.

Getting Maxx and making him productive would be a slap in the Ravens face, I'm all for that

Didn't the Rats move up in the draft to take Williams in the second round, ahead of the Steelers?

There's guaranteed to be some veteran FA pickup at this position. They've got to get all the rookies signed, work on any contract extensions and see how much cap space is leftover. AB left the cupboard bare for us.

Hahahahaa, this is why I LOVE THE DRAFT, & all the bitching & whining we do here on the board....MAXX WILLIAMS was someone a few years ago this board was so upset we didn't get. All anyone would say was we were ****** by the RAVENS as they took him right before we were gonna grab him.... we missed him, yada yada yada....Now look....

63 TOTAL catches, ouch...2nd rounder too

bring in max williams to compete with Grimble

Jermaine Gresham is only 31?? Feels like that dude has been around damn near forever, and he that he should be closer to 40! Still though, he sucks, major butterfingers, no way I'd want him. That whole list is caca, Steelers might as well roll with what they have and see if any interesting camp cuts develop on the TE front.

Agree that list is a bunch of hand me downs.

Let’s not forget we have a TE that’s listed as a RB all ready on the team.

Steelers might just use 2 TE sets less often. They can go with the extra WR more often or when they want more blocking they could have Nix or another
RB in the game to block.

Last year the team had 1116 offensive plays.

Tight ends (James, McDonald, Gimble) accumulated a total of 1300 offensive plays. Nix also pitched in 110 if you want to count FB's into the mix as well.

That's not much more than 1 TE on the field per play. Maybe 15% did we go 2 TE's or 1TE & 1FB all season.

This is going down. In 2017 it was 1348 TE plays in 1108 offensive plays. Nix had a lot more in 2017 as well (182).

Does the trend stay the same or do we go back to using 2 TE's a lot again?

Not sure a new rookie TE is going to change the dial on this. You could argue the loss of Antonio Brown could push us to less 3-WR and 4-WR looks. That is logical. Does Gentry earn more spots?

Remember, Gimble only played 171 snaps and 174 snaps respectively the last two seasons. Has his performance earned a massive increase?

The logic this season is McDonald is the man. He's getting 100% participation if healthy. Gimble will continue to get his 10% participation in heavy sets to mix things up. Maybe Gentry earns some of those sets in camp. The real issue based on how they have the roster set up is what happens when/if McDonald gets hurt.

Based on participation numbers as an indicator of coaching confidence, Gimble isn't the answer to go into a game getting 100% participation. Will Gentry be ready? Will this coaching staff nurture Gentry to be ready or just ask him to be a part-time contributor. That's a coaching mindset to me on how that room handles itself. Gentry has to be groomed to be the "backup #1" TE, not a part-time #2 TE roll. Gimble can do that and if he gets hurt (and McDonald is healthy), the game plan can absorb that absence a few weeks without a hiccup. If McDonald gets hurt and we want Gimble to me #1, I don't like that at all.

Grimble needs to play more he has had the ability to make some hard catches.
