A lot of different threads discussing how Tomlin took over play calling, and how horrible his defense is. I'm going to be in the minority here, but I'm going to disagree. Most of our big defensive breakdowns have come from miscommunication on the back end, a missed assignment, etc. Now don't get me wrong, some teams can exploit a scheme no matter what, and the lack of adjustments at time is very frustrating... But I stumbled on this article, really breaking down the philosophy.

I think Tomlin would make a great DC if he has the time and the talent. I think he is ok doing it as head coach but not great as he has his attention divided. I think he is a far better x an o's coach than some give him credit for. I just never like the head coach calling plays or defenses rather than focusing on the overall game.

It means you're not teaching your players ****. They don't teach worth a damn and some of the players don't put in the OT to learn the defense inside and out.

It just never looks like a polished team on both sides of the ball. Ever. It's enough to be semi sorta ok.

The result is they get handled well by seasons end and get mauled when they manage to make the playoffs.

If you're expecting different results from the current formula. Don't. They define madness right now.

This has been a problem for years. Cam Heyward has talked about this and guys not doing their job. I'm fine saying it's not necessarily the scheme, but the execution, however, when you continually have communication breakdowns, that comes down directly on coaching or personnel.

Yeah, but think back at how many seasons with essentially the same DB's in the same defense there were "communication breakdowns.". That is coaching.

But the argument is mostly that his scheme is the culprit. I agree they need to find a better way to teach the players their responsibility in the scheme, cut down on the mental mistakes, but the scheme itself makes a lot of sense in today's NFL.

The main flaw of the scheme is if they don't generate a pass rush then they're toast through the air and if they don't have three studs on the DL, then they're toast on the ground. The defense has unfortunately become top heavy. Heyward, Watt, and Fitzpatrick carried the defense this year. Just not enough middle class players on the roster outside of Haden, Witherspoon, and Edmunds.

You could add Highsmith there, that's 8 of 11,also if tuitt had played the mediocre ILBs wouldn't have been so exposed

Scheme is an issue and miscommunication is an issue. A time or two or three, especially early in the season, you can blame miscommunication on the players but when it is a chronic problem all year and especially year after year, the problem sits smack dab on the coach calling the D and the plays. I don't need to name him but you all know who I'm talking about.

I'm not so sure on the quality of "Tuitt" play as he had given up prior to training camp. He came in way over weight and NOT in anything near football shape.

The biggest problem with defensive scheme is the implimentation of said scheme. To many times there are break downs and NO adjustments. When Vince Williams was covering the opposing teams BEST wide receiver for multiple plays in a row................... that is a problem in both scheme and adjustments, both fall to coaching.

Thanks for all your great post(s) and humor Litos

That's why I don't want Edmunds. He's not smart enough to play this defense, and constantly lets his team down in execution. I'm ready to move on from that guy and hire someone who can make a difference at SS like Tyrian Matheu or however you spell honey badger's name.

I said this in another thread. No scheme or talent will overcome bad culture.

Tom Brady threw for 22 tds no picks beat us every which way there was.. Mahomes 14 tds in 3 games that is who you got to beat to get to the Super Bowl! now throw in burrows. this is one of the highest paid defenses in football and has been made up primarily of first or second round picks. If you were paying the bills I wonder how all God blessed awesome tomlin coaching is.. lol Mahomes called it 7 on 7 I’ll take his word for it.

2 DLinemen vs running teams, 2 DLinemen on short yardage situations is a scheme issue and just idiotic. The Browns first four offensive TD's in that wildcard game were with us with 2DLinemen vs the best running team in the NFL.
Timmons, Bostic, Shazier, Spillaine, Bush, insert any starting ILB here, chasing around the other teams WR's over and over again is a scheme issue.

For the blind supporters........................ what's the word now ?
