This week, the Pittsburgh Steelers made it official, as they finally named Teryl Austin the team’s new defensive coordinator. This came as great news to Steelers’ star safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick as he “got his wish” according to the latest episode of Steelers Live via Twitter:
The Steelers are coming off a year where their defense struggled to stop the run (2,483 total rushing yards) where they ranked dead last. Fitzpatrick was forced to play closer to the line of scrimmage this past season to help try and alleviate some of those struggles, resulting in 124 total tackles (more than his previous three seasons combined).
With Austin now at the helm on defense, let’s hope we can see Fitzpatrick again back roaming the secondary so he can do what he does best — play the eyes of the quarterback and cause turnovers. With recent news of head coach Mike Tomlin being the one calling the majority of the defensive plays over the past several seasons, let’s see just how much control Austin will truly end up having. As long as “Minkah can be Minkah,” I see this defense improving, regardless of who the play calls are coming from.

“TA, he’s a great coach,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’m not going to talk too good about him because I want him to stay in Pittsburgh. I know everybody else is trying to get at him. He’s a great coach. I love his attention to detail, the way that he approaches the game, the way he lets the players have a voice. A lot of coaches don’t really let players have a voice. I’m appreciative of that.”
