Things tend to always come full circle. Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season and the search for a new starting quarterback in 2022 began. The team decided that former Chicago Bear and Buffalo Bill, Mitch Trubisky was the guy to, at least temporarily, fill his shoes. What many people don’t know is that the two quarterbacks had a relationship prior to Trubisky even being drafted by the Bears in 2017. When the soon to be rookie out of North Carolina was going through the process, he reached out to both Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning. While Manning is the “better” all-time quarterback, Trubisky said that Big Ben’s advice truly stuck with him. They were able to speak often due to the two having the same agent.

Roethlisberger told Trubisky to take control of his career and an article on Sports Mockery explains what this meant to Trubisky at the time and what the interpretation eventually turned into. Trubisky truly had no idea what that meant at that time, but as he began to start for the Bears, he learned that it meant to lead with assertiveness and by example. Then, he lost his starting job and the words from Roethlisberger meant even more.

After he was benched for Nick Foles in 2020, Trubisky was thought to be a bust. When he got the opportunity to start again that same season, he changed his approach based on the advice he got from Roethlisberger. Trubisky began to speak up in meetings and had matured in a matter of weeks because he decided it was time to take control of his career. He had transitioned from being a yes-man to a leader on and off the field.

Roethlisberger also told Trubisky to be himself and confident in his abilities. The word from Buffalo is that the Steelers new quarterback was nothing but professional and he is a great person overall. This is what fans want in a quarterback. Trubisky brings maturity and leadership to the locker room and the words of wisdom from Roethlisberger still echo in his head.

Opinions are flooding the media with Trubisky’s capability, or lack there of, to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers. But, with a 29-21 career record, a year behind watching Josh Allen in a dynamic Bills offense, and a ton of untapped potential, Trubisky has the ability to outperform his doubters’ expectations in 2022. Trubisky mentioned in his first press conference as a Steeler that he plans and wants to continue the winning legacy that Roethlisberger established in Pittsburgh.

Trubisky is still taking the advice to this day and the two quarterbacks are more connected than many people think. He had more than one team interested in him and at the end of the day, he took matters into his own hands and chose to come to Pittsburgh. Let’s hope that he reaches back out to Roethlisberger and the future Hall of Fame quarterback is able to help him transition into the starting quarterback of the most storied franchise in NFL history.
