Most Likely to Return on 53-Man Roster During 2021 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday afternoon. Of course, this group is not set in stone and the likelihood that the roster changes before the opener against the Buffalo Bills remains high due to the Steelers lack of depth at offensive guard and in the secondary.

The more interesting thing to take a look at is the players who were cut today that could potentially make a return to the Steelers 53-man roster at some point this season. Players that were cut need to clear waivers Wednesday at 4pm EST in order to be eligible for the Steelers practice squad. While very difficult to predict because a number of them could be picked up by other teams, here are a few names to look out for heading into the season:

B.J. Finney (OL)

This release came as a shock to many of us. The Steelers may have their eyes elsewhere, but injuries on the offensive line are common and Finney could find his way back sooner rather than later. He also is not limited to guard as he is a viable option at center if Kendrick Green or JC Hassenauer end up injured at some point. Finney is also very familiar with the offense and the Steelers tend to be more comfortable with familiarity.

Cody White (WR)

It is tough to make a decision here with White, Rico Bussey and Matthew Sexton all being released, but with White being on the practice squad a year ago and being familiar with the organization, I give him the edge to get a shot at the 53-man this season. I expect Bussey to have a shot at being on the practice squad as well if he clears waivers as the Steelers typically carry two wide receivers on the practice squad.

Jaylen Samuels (RB)

A lot would have to happen to have Samuels back, but if the Steelers have their eyes set on four running backs plus fullback, Derek Watt, Samuels could be one injury away from a trip back if he isn’t picked up by another team along the way. He would most likely need to be on the practice squad to play for the Steelers again this season.

Joshua Dobbs (QB)

Although not officially cut because he was placed on Injured Reserve with a turf toe injury, Dobbs is clearly the #4 QB in the Steelers eyes currently. He, just as most guys on this list, would need an injury to get onto the 53-man roster. Albeit, the Steelers traditionally do not keep three quarterbacks on the active roster so barring something crazy, Dobbs will not dress this season.

Kevin Rader (TE)

Rader is a solid candidate for the practice squad and although an injury at tight end would certainly get him onto the active roster, poor play by Zach Gentry could also give him an opportunity as Rader had a very good and impressive preseason.

Who do you think we could see return to, not only on the practice squad, but the 53-man roster this season? Let us know in the comments below!

Samuels will be on a 53-man roster, but it won't be the Steelers. He's a capable veteran third-down back -- another team will scoop him up.

Finney will be back

Right now I tend to agree with this pending on if we bring in a FA or not. TJ Watt's contract will dictate some of how much we can do.
