As per several reports. I always figured a phone call was made.

For almost two years, rumors floated in NFL circles about the league making back-channel deals with the then St. Louis Rams about drafting Michael Sam as a way to save face.
Now someone is reporting it. Howard Balzer of 590 The Fan in St. Louis wrote that the NFL made a deal with the Rams that they would be exempt from HBO’s behind-the-scenes training camp series, "Hard Knocks" if they drafted Sam. The Rams took Sam with the third of their four seventh-round picks (pick No. 250 overall) in the 2014 NFL draft.
Shutdown Corner sent emails to the Rams and to the NFL for a response, but neither has responded yet. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher went on "The Dan Patrick Show" and denied the report.
“That in itself is absolutely absurd. It’s 100 percent incorrect,” Fisher said. “I was really taken aback by those comments. It’s insulting, from my standpoint, as it relates to Michael. We had three seventh-round picks [up to that point]. When we drafted Michael he was the best player on the board. Who in their right mind would think that you give up a draft choice to avoid doing something like that?”
Sam did not make the team out of training camp, despite an impressive preseason performance, and was cut without being re-signed to the practice squad. Sam never has appeared in an NFL regular-season game and currently is a free agent.
