The resignation of Italy’s prime minister Monday marked the abrupt downfall of the third key European partner of President Obama this year, as the president becomes increasingly powerless to confront a populist wave sweeping both sides of the Atlantic and challenging traditional U.S. alliances.

Matteo Renzi’s surrender in Italy came just seven weeks after Mr. Obama toasted the 41-year-old prime minister at a gilded State Dinner at the White House for possessing “the vision and the values that can carry Italy, and Europe, forward.” Mr. Renzi submitted his resignation after Italian voters resoundingly rejected his proposals for political reform in a Sunday referendum that became a judgment on Mr. Renzi and his internationalist stance.

Less than a week earlier, French President Francois Hollande — another key partner with Mr. Obama on issues such as fighting the Islamic State — announced he would not seek re-election.

Come gather around people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
And if your breath to you is worth saving
Then you better start swimming or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changing

Here's an idea. Why doesn't Obama just go on a 2-week apology tour, then cap off his presidency with a 4-week golf vacation?

He's busy Coach. The libs are preparing to succeed from the US and will need a fearless leader with experience in dealing with snowflakes.

I can't think of a worse president than O-bum-ah.

He set America back decades.

Thing is, the referendum vote on constitutional reform in Italy would likely have made things better and government more efficient. However, because people don't want politics as usual and PM Renzi was in favor of it, the people voted against it. I think if Renzi was against it, the people would have voted for it. I think if Renzi had moved just a tiny bit to the Right like Hollande did, he would be a perfectly fine Prime Minister.

I have no problem at all with disgruntled dems leaving the Union. They can all leave any time they want, and go wherever else in world they want. Venezuela or Zimbabwe sound like just the sort of paradise they are looking for.

Or just have them live in the blue counties, they can visit or cross through the red counties with an ID and a visa but must back to their blue county leftist Utopias before midnight.

I always thought the Migrant crisis and globalization debate was going to affect Europe and their political balance of power much more so than here in America (at least at first).

But Trump's surprise victory just heightens the almost total shift in the western political world to a more conservative, right-leaning ideology. While I don't understand every European countries' parliamentary process it is quite evident that right-wing parties throughout Europe are going to make significant gains in representative seats, prime ministers and presidents.

The effects of leftist selfishness in pushing their economic globalization, mass socialism and open border policies while tearing down (and making people feel guilty) about nationalism have HUGE implications for the next 25 years.

In my opinion, it is vital the right-wing does not take for granted their advantage and overreach on policy changes and cause a similar counter-reaction in the future. It is much better to lay the foundations of conservative policy rather than reach for the sky with twigs and paper only to have it all blown away with one political cycle.

In my opinion the best thing the Right can do is to do what's right, make peoples' lives better, and take credit for it. Oh, and don't cave in to the Leftys.

Exactly. Can we cleanse the party of the RINO influences while we're at it?

It is critical for the mid-term elections and the next presidential election for the Republican party and the conservatives to get their **** together and put together successful legislation that actually works. If they can do that and "untrigger" some of these up in arms liberals, the pendulum may not swing all the way to the other side in the mid-terms.

If they manage to in-fight and bicker, well that will be that.
