It’s been a pleasure watching our offensive coordinator be engaged with his players, coaching them up and even talking trash and building a relationship with them. We haven’t seen this in a while. The offense appears eager to play for him as well as for each other. You can tell there is a sense/purpose with what’s building up. I’m looking forward to seeing how Smitty’s offense develops over the course of the season.

I believe it will be better. When you look back at Canada it's really shocking he was retained after the second year. I got the second year. You were transitioning from a hof qb who likely controlled a lot to journeyman and a rookie. He should have gotten his opportunity with a blank sheet. But even with late season improvements it was clear his offense wasn't good enough. Any other HC would have been canned for the wasted third year. Any other.

The Fichtner/Canada era represents an enormous rate of talent waste and unfathomably bad coaching.
Neither were qualified, especially Canada, and they helped set the offense back. A lot of good things about Smith right now and hopefully that will continue once the regular season starts.

I do not blame the Fichtner era on front office or even Tomlin. Haley was productive but tumultuous. They figured Ben could run the offense with someone who could help him prepare that he got a long with. Not terrible idea.

Until Coach Tomlin handcuffed him.

Salute the nation

Canada on the other hand is all Tomlin. His guy. Hus connection. He should have been held accountable for that. Anyone else would have lost job. Hell Belicheat did.

Fichtner was even more Tomlin's guy than Canada, though he had a connection to both.

Tomlin and Fichtner coached together at Arkansas State in the 1990s.

Both Fichtner and Canada were instances of Tomlin promoting his friends to the detriment of the team.

Fichtner might have been a slightly better play caller than Canada (some contest), but it was under Fichtner that Ben started playing exclusively from shotgun, throwing the ball a million times as the running game declined.

It's probably not a coincidence Ben blew out his throwing elbow after his first season with Fichtner.

Its not Tomlins fault either, it all falls on the ownership at this point.
