Old School vs. Today's NFL

The last undefeated team just lost by two scores to an opponent who ran the ball 49 times for 152, 3.1 YPC and had a 2:1 TOP advantage. Is the emphasis on passing overrated?

Yes it is. Even more so with so many teams going a tad soft with the pass happy bs.

It's a different mentality. Smacking the other team in the mouth all game long. It will always work if you invest in the talent needed to make it work. It will damn sure open up your passing game.

Same thing goes with defense. The arm tackling and people standing around looking at someone trying to tackle...swarm that ****** like a pack of wolves fighting over a piece of meat.

It's a culture and mindset of making the other guys tap out. Which you can still do inside of the rules.

A balanced offense can help you win the TOP and in the process keep a good defense rested. Or a bad one off the field more whichever your flavor. Also makes a really predictable offense less predictable. The key is being able to run consistently. It helps put a little less pressure on a rookie QB not having to force throws. For me there is no reason that this team couldn't be more like Tennessee's offensive philosophy with a better OC.

You saw how welcoming a bad run D was to go against. Get a better OC and you can run against better run defending teams too.

THIS, great post and thanks for all the good ones along the way.

It al starts in the "Trench Warfare" players. We have gotton non-invested there and it shows. We haven't had the up front force in quite a long time. Change that and everything gets better, even coaching.

Yes, consistency and the ability to rely on the run game in short yardage situations. This has been the albatross of a team known as the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Statistically, it doesn’t always show as teams will only average 3.X YPC but converted or scored on several runs of 1 or 2 yards bringing the average down.

Yep---and the Steelers stats from this past Sunday were even more slanted in those 2 critical indicators..

Winning formula...especially with young or average QB's at the helm..

Its really that simple.

The hard part is your O-Line committing to the constant physicality that is needed from them..

Washington also was +2 in turnovers, the last one providing directly the two-score final differential you mentioned. And additionally, the Redskins (yeah, I said it) still had more passing yards than the Eagles.

Turnover margin carries over to any era, and typically tells the tale in the end.

A-N-D

Our offensive "trench" guys are saying that's what they like to do. Some interviewed to that saying it's easier and hope for more. Granted they were going against a very injured defensive front but to hear them say they want more was a good thing.

Imagine the STEELERSactually investing some TOP picks towards this OL. I think two of the top three picks need to be OL and the third a DL (in any order on who's on the board but the 1st & 2-2nds)

Maybe Trog is Coach
No, Coach is on the right side at least politically. Trog is on the right side when it comes to football.
