You don't replace Ben.

I bring this up because some folks started discussing possible Tombert moves in the near future to bring in a QB to transition in the next year to two to life beyond Ben and there was talk of whether or not there was faith that Tomlin could find and or groom somebody to replace Ben.

I repeat. You don't replace Ben.

He's a Hall of Fame QB, one of the best to ever play the game. Pittsburgh will much more likely get a guy like Trent Dilfer, or Landry Jones, or Tom Savage. We fans are NOT going to see a smooth transition to a superb QB who can control the offense and move the ball up and down the field with joyful regularity.

It always surprises me how many of you fail to realize that Roethlisberger is among the top 10 in most categories ALL TIME. We're talking Johnny Unitas, Otto Graham, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, John Elway, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, and even Cheater Boy... Roethlisberger is better or as good than most of them in most of the major QB categories. Completion Percentage, Yards Per Attempt, Yards Per Completion, TD / Int Ratio, TDS, Ints. I can't really understand how people enjoying the overwhelming success of Ben Roethlisberger in the post-modern era of football can fail to recognize how ******* amazing he is. There is only 1 QB right now who is really better. And that's Aaron Rodgers. (I don't count Br*dy. You all know why. But of course, T*m's numbers certainly would have been impressive. It would have been interesting to see how he would have done without Ernie Adams in his ear throughout his career.)

So, you don't replace Ben Roethlisberger. You hunker down and hope that Bell is good enough to keep you competitive. You hope that Brown is good enough to do 3/4s of what he does with Roethlisberger with some other QB. You hope that Tomlin and Haley or whoever the offensive coordinator is at that point can come up with clever enough schemes to continue to keep the Steelers a force in the AFC North.

But replace Roethlisberger? That's just not going to happen.

Yes we will. Just you watch, wiggy. Just you watch

There's a reason the top QB's make more than anybody else. Here's hoping it doesn't take decades to replace him with someone more than serviceable this time around.

You think so Omar? You think within 2 or 3 seasons the Steelers will pick up another Hall of Fame QB?

I think YOU may be stretching a bit.

You're right, he likely won't be replaced because there are few quarterbacks in the history of the game that plays the style of game that he plays. However, that doesn't mean the Steelers can't get a good quarterback. What they can't do is expect guys like Jones or Dobbs to be the answer and try to go out and get a guy who they think can carry the franchise.

Its not about replacing Ben, its about having someone competent enough to keep us from being 4-12 after Ben leaves. The core of this team is ******* rock solid. I would hate to see this team with all of its talent drop off because we don't have an adequate starter at QB. Landry is not that piece, neither is Dobbs. I would much rather us draft a QB in R1 and if Ben is back next year let him learn behind Ben and when Ben does eventually retire we have our guy in place. Signing a FA QB or making a trade is probable especially since much of this team will be loaded with veterans and they will want a stable QB. Finding a franchise QB is the hardest part of the NFL. There are very few that are at the upper echelon and a lot in the middle with even more who just never click. Those of us old enough to remember life before Ben appreciate what he has meant to the team but know we need something in place or we could be living in misery after the fact.

1st Round Qbs are a crap shoot no matter how you look at it. Who could have known Roethlisberger would turn out as he did?

Eli has been good but not extraordinary. Rivers has been consistent but never an "Over the hump" QB. But those guys were really some exceptional QBs from that class.

And since then?

Winston? Mediocre.
Newton? Whatever.
Mariotta? Paging Dr. Somebody
Wentz? Let's give him a year or two before we decide he's the 2nd coming.
Jones? Meh... He's safe. I'll give you that.
Ryan? Phillip Rivers, the return.
Prescott? Now that's just funny. Wasn't too impressive without jarhead back there was he?

It's true, you can find plenty of serviceable QBs. But damn few great ones. Those come along very very rarely.

In my lifetime there's been Marino, Elway, Manning (P), Favre, and Roethlisberger. Special mention to McNair and Warren Moon.

Im hoping for a good stop gap till the right guy can be found. You have to remember if Bens money is off the books you have a lot of cash to play with and a hell of a lot of talent on the roster. Unfortunately Bell will be an issue. They've used him up and might as well get what they can for him.

I think Bell is a great all-purpose back. I don't think he's as solid a straight "running back" as folks like to think, but as a pass catching back out of the backfield, he's as good as the league's seen since Marshall Faulk.

If they can afford to keep him at a reasonable price, they may need to. After Ben retires, this season or next, they will need a very good running game and a solid offensive line to give them a steady offense. If they could find a decent QB who can simply move the chains more often than not I suppose that would do until they stumble upon another franchise QB. Even then, I suspect it will be 20 to 30 years before they find somebody like Roethlisberger. It has been nice having him around for so long.

Uh yeah, if you don't think wentz is a bona-fide star at this point, you're either purposely being disengenous to support your assertions, or just blind

We need someone who doesnt **** up. Just above average with no **** ups should do.

If Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold both come out...I would be willing to trade an exceptionally good player for the #1 or #2 overall pick. I know I'm going to get crushed for this but...

...I'd trade Antonio Brown to Cleveland for the #1 pick.

The Steelers have an exceptionally good record of picking Wide Receivers and we seem to have found another good one in JuJu...
Trade AB to the Browns (who took a QB in the 1st last year), take Darnold and roll with another young set of WRs next season while Ben finishes up.

I know trading AB to the Browns is a tough pill to swallow, but I don't think the Giants will give up #2 and Cleveland is just dumb enough to do it...

I'd sit tight and wait for Baker to fall. When the moment is right, dish out a few draft picks to move up and get him.

eh, I'm not sold on Baker making it in the NFL. I was hoping CLE would pull the trigger on him, so the Steelers wouldn't have to. Maybe he will succeed, but I see Johnny Manziel 2.0.

I'll never understand why the first person to reply to a post has to quote the entire first post. We know what you're referring to..

Yeah. Just don’t do it......We know what quote you are referring to.......:drum:

You are bat **** crazy.

I know i will be in the minority on this one..but if Lamar Jackson is still availble when we pick i would be interested.. Mason Rudolph also

Don't get me wrong. I've watched Wentz in a couple games and I think he's very good. But it is only his 2nd season. Shall we give it a few years before we determine he's the greatest QB ever to don an Eagles uniform.

I would never trade Brown. Between Brown, Bell and Ju Ju they may have just enough fire power on the offense to weather a few years of mid-level QB play and still manage to compete for the North. As I said, if a "normal" QB can still get Brown to 2/3 or 3/4 of the numbers he gets with Ben - That would be pretty darn good.

I'd be ok with that if we just didn't waste a pick on Dobbs last year, I really hated that pick and still do.
I think we will have to wait til the following year's draft to take a QB. I still think Ben plays at least 2 more years.
