Reports are Penn State is finalizing a deal to steal Ohio State DC Jim Knowles for $3 Million per year making him the highest paid assistant by far.

This is Penn State pushing in all their chips for 2025. They spent a ton to retain most of the 24 team. They hired a new athletic director a few years ago and he has been very aggressive.

Strange move. There was scuttlebutt that Knowles and Larry Johnson, OSU’s defensive line coach, didn’t get along and didn’t agree on philosophy. Could be true. Good get for PSU but very surprising that he would leave for the same job elsewhere.

I don’t know if I’d call it stealing. I read they are paying Ohio State $1.5 million for this honor.

Surprising. Penn St was already pretty good at defense. I'm always worried someone's gonna steal away the Buckeyes' WR coach.

Surprising move. Money talks. Maybe he wanted a little more security. Surprised OSU didn't match it

Penn State should've used some NIL money to steal some of OSU's players.

I'm sure lots of teams tried to poach OSU players. I read that WR Jeremiah Smith was offered $3 Million by some team. Probably multiple teams.

I also read Knowles may have had issues with other coaches on staff. Seems other coaches did not like him getting so much credit. Their DL coach Larry Johnson was at Penn State for years and he had issues there getting along with others so he moved to Ohio State

Knowles, after the first Oregon game, was basically told, “whatever you are doing, change it”. Nick Saban even called out his scheme, saying it was “antiquated.” The word is that was basically the beginning of the end. To his credit he did change it up and they went on and played great after that. But I think he decided then that he was moving on.

If ya can't beat em, steal all the coordinators! :ROFLMAO:

Our professional team might want to consider this strategy !

Salute the nation

I don't understand this move. PSUs defense has not been the problem. I'm not sure who made this call (Franklin or the university), but maybe they are setting him up to take over for Franklin.

Seeing social media reaction it appears that a few weeks ago, OSU fans would tell you Knowles was the greatest DC in the world and a big part of their championship run. Now he leaves and he's a buffoon who had to have Ryan Day tell him what to do. Also his scheme takes so long to learn that PSU will struggle for a few years.

What's not to understand about the move? Penn State needed a new DC because their DC Tom Allen pulled a Mike Munchak and took the Clemson job to be close to his daughter. Penn State went after the best DC they could get.

It appears they went after former Penn State player and current DC at USC D'Anton Lynn. Lynn signed a new deal with USC. Could be a smart move because Lincoln Riley could be on thin ice and he could get the HC job there.

Al Golden went to the Bengals.

Knowles was the last big name they could get. If he passed, they probably would have to go with an internal promotion or take a shot on a young guy.

Knowles is a Philly area guy, so he fits Penn State. Franklin tried to get him a few years ago and at that time PSU had an incompetent athletic director and their money wasn't in line. Their new AD has fixed their internal issues.

Another key reason for Knowles is he has shut down Andy Kotelnicki's offense every time he faced them, even when he was at Oklahoma State. I have a feeling they will get together and he could give Kotelnicki some notes on things he can tweak.
