Well, let's get right to it. Will/should the Pirates trade the face of the franchise?

Sources: Important distinction on Andrew McCutchen -- Pirates aren't sitting back, taking calls. Been the aggressors, offering him to teams.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 5h5 hours ago
Sources: #Pirates targeting #Nationals minor-league OFer Victor Robles, 19, in McCutchen talks, as they did in July. Will want more as well.

Will be sad to see Cutch go. He is the face of the rejuvenation of the franchise.

I don't know all of the details but why are they shopping him around? Are they afraid to lose him in free agency and get nothing in return? Is his contract up soon? Just seems a shame to see him go. I think they ought to keep him around and let him grow his hair out again and see if he can have a rebound year.

Let's be real, they aren't even going to attempt to pay him. You can look at it as though they're too cheap to pay him, don't want to invest in a guy over 30 or both. Either way, they want to get something in return. Nothing like shopping him when he is basically at the lowest value of his career.

I am tied to my youth when the city of Pittsburgh fielded a
Great franchise known as the Lumber Company.

Feel the need to support the legacy.

Every Pittsburgh fan should boycott going to the games until the team is sold. This is ridiculous!

I hate baseball, but what he's doing to the fans is ridiculous, almost as ridiculous as the fans that defend him for some reason.

Honest question, why in the hell do any of you pay attention to this team while that douche bag is the owner?

I stopped several years ago. I will only attend a game if I get free tickets.

You know, a couple of years ago I thought Nutting was proving me wrong. I thought the team was on track to building something strong by bolstering their minor league system. They had lots of young guys on the roster and they were winning. Only needed to fill a couple of holes with veterans and they could have competed with anyone. Then after last year, he is once again proving me right. They get rid of Walker for Niese. What a horrible trade. Then they dump Melancon when they were still in the hunt. Now they let Sean Rod go and are looking to trade 'Cutch. For all the good they did over the years, they undid it in one. Nutting's only concern is filling seats in his pretty stadium. Winning a championship is much further down on his list.

I think Cutch is signed thru 2018 so it's not like they HAVE to trade him but if you are going to do it why not start feeling out offers now. In my opinion the Pirates won't be able to this offseason and depending on where they are come June or July might pull the trigger then. But if he's batting .325 with 15 dingers at the break he isn't going anywhere if we are in the thick of it. But if he is killing it and we are 12 games back there's going to be a team who will give up the farm to get him. So I see what the team is doing. Feel out some offers and what teams are willing to give up for him and if the right deal is offered take it. If not don't worry they have all year and probably half of next (thought his value will go down dramatically in the summer of 2018).

From all the reports I'm seeing, they are doing more that feeling out some offers now. They are aggressively trying to trade him. And knowing them, they'll get garbage in return. If they get anything less than someone's #2 starter and at least another player in return, they'll have been ripped off. I'm not sold on our pitching staff.

When is the last time the Pirates traded a proven veteran for prospects and the deal worked out?
I'm thinking Tony Pena for Andy Van Slyke, Mike Lavalliere, and Mike Dunne back in 1987. Every other deal has just been an obvious salary dump.

Pirates need some strong pitching. I was ok with the roster except for pitching. I don't know if Cutch has a few good seasons left in him if he's signed through 2018. Give him a go next season and see how all works out. I do think at the moment the team will be middle of the road. Hopefully they prove me wrong

They should now extend Cutch for another 3 years and look to trade Marte or Polanco in the future.
When Meadows is ready they will have an extra starting outfielder and Marte or Polanco might bring
the pitching help that could let them make a run again.

.500 or less, middle of the pack.

having Adam Frazier and Jaso might make up for losing SRod and Joyce.

but they got Cole, Taillon and hot garbage for starters.

Cutch could have "how do you like me now" year...Josh Bell has monster potential.

if they don't get sprinkled with Lumber Company dust....3rd in the Division at best.

The entire infield is made up of platoon players. The pitching staff is nothing that great (they are decent, but no one is outstanding) and for the second off season in a row we jettisoned the only real power threat we had. They'll be lucky to finish 3rd. The Brewers played better down the stretch than did the Pirates.

All the Pirates did for 20 f'n years was draft pitcher after pitcher, the best of which turned out to be slightly above average, and sold us on the idea that they can always trade some extra pitching for a hitter. Except they never did that either. Instead of drafting players who hit balls over fences. I think Nutting has seen that the team got as far as it will WITH Cutch, therefore it makes no sense to keep paying him big money, plus he had a down year, so they might as well trade and go WITHOUT him.

Nutting subscribes to the old Branch Rickey dictum to then-Pirate slugger Ralph Kiner in 1953 when he wanted more money. "We finished last with you, we can finish last without you."

Nova...3 years 26 million.

Great, and surprising, move by the Pirates.

Nova has been inconsistent in recent years, but he showed in his time with the Pirates last season what he is capable of.

This was a risk I didn't really expect the Pirates to take, but it was a necessary one for the team's 2017 season.

Nova...3 years 26 million.

I'm excited about Nova coming back and his potential. He seemed to really thrive under Ray Searage. I'm glad to see Neal Huntington learned his lesson after letting J.A. Happ get away last year. Now it's time for them make the trade for Jose Quintana.
