I was too young to understand the glory of the 70s (or the pain before it). I came into my own with the 80s. Man, there were some damn questionable teams but there was always a cadre of players that made me show up every Sunday to watch. In a way it was painful. But, even as a young dude, I understood. So there was joy and loss ... but it was all ok. And in the 90s it turned into some darn good football (with some very painful losses). There was a lot of great ups and terrible downs. But I never felt like hating. Always seemed like opportunity was close.

So, Cowher finally gets that SB, **** happens, we get Tomlin and he wins with a pre-built team.

Then came the middling years (which continue until now), where we aren't bad enough to be losers but not good enough to be winners. And we are talking about a decade plus of this. We have seen elite defenses and offenses come and go with nary a whimper in the playoffs. We have become the mediocrity. We are not winning teams but, I guess, we are not losing teams (?). It is funny, in the 80s, even with the downside, I found some entertainment and always thought there was a way forward. Now, the upside and downside is mediocrity, and that is an empty feeling.

Long story short, I guess I should have TLDR'ed this, but I would rather have some losing seasons to have some winning seasons. At least, forever, the Browns and Bengals knew they were losers. We don't know what we are. We aren't losers or winners. We are continuing mediocrity. There are glimpses of hope but they are always stolen away.

I beg the Rooneys to wipe the coaching slate clean. If they don't, because that is their choice, it is what it is. Make me sad though. Sad to see the tradition die.
