By Matt Papiernik, @Matt_Papiernik*on Twitter SteelerNation.com   There are two things you think of when you think of the Pittsburgh Steelers and their history. First is their terrorizing defense they have had the majority of their franchise. Second is their hard nosed style of football, including their ability to run the ball. The Steelers have […]

1 and 2 are spot on. After that though it gets a little murky for me.

I was looking over Franco's stats...I can't believe he had 90 fumbles.

Bell would be no higher than #5(possibly lower) in my book, to many injuries and suspensions. He also lied to the team while he was a Steelers player, character COUNTS.

The Patriots have the most superbowl rings. . Ben won 2 superbowls while boozing and racking up sexual assault charges. Did the Steelers care?
No
Its about money and winning. Character means **** in the NFL.

Mendenhall doesn't belong on the list. Give me Pollard or Jackson of his fumble prone and sulky rear end. Hoak should not rate unless you give him bonus points for being a RB coach.

I'd rate Parker over Bell. more reliable way more explosive, less suspensions and hold outs ect.... Parker's play won us a super bowl.

No the cheats don't have the most rings. They are tied with the help of a lot of cheating. For someone with Ben in his user name you seem to have no problem dissing him.

I rank Bus one. The dude took on whole defenses sometimes single handedly in terms of the team knew what was coming and still couldn't stop it. I've always said if they could have preserved him some for playoffs it would have been different. Like New England knew what was coming last year and they just couldn't stop Henry anyhow.

On Franco, in his defense, teams were geared to stop the run during his day. I once meet the late Steve Coruson, who years back was still pretty a pretty big guy in the late 1990's.

Steve was about my height, rather broadly built. You could tell he still worked out. The man was very reserved and spoke with a quiet voice, but cool enough to let me try on his super bowl ring, which I did not ask for rather he offered it for me to try on, which was a special sports moment for me. Too bad the phones back then didn't have cameras in them. No one at the Steeler Bar where I watched the games in the 1990's knew who he was. The owner had to announce who he was and he was there to sign merchandise and talk with fans.

Back to the conversation, Coruson didn't like to talk negatively about his teammates. When I bought up Franco whom, he blocked for and mentioned that I was okay with him running out of bounds at times after a first down, he said Franco was a real gamer, but wasn't the type of back to seek contact. He said Noll coached us to be ready in case our back fumbled after taking a blow. That could have been way of saying yes, Franco was a fumbler.

The list seems pretty good to me. I'd keep Franco in first place barely in front of "The Bus" but maybe that's just because I grew up in the 70s and Franco's 150 yards in that first SB win over Minn. make a helluva impression on me oh, and then of course there was the "Immaculate Reception". Tried to think of some other names but couldn't really come up with any. Barry Foster was a real blast from the past. Dude was really good but his career was way too short. I'd keep Bell where he is. His acrimonious exit aside, there's no denying he was a great RB for the team.

Franco still holds the record for most total yards in SBs. I don’t think there ever was a better ‘big game’ back than Franco. If the game was important, he always showed up. He had deceptive speed for a big man. He is for sure #1 in my book.

Mendenhall absolutely belongs. Without him they wouldn’t have been to the Super Bowl in 2010 without him, not only was he key in 3-1 start sans Ben with nearly 1300 yards & 13 TDs, dominated AFC Championship game & although his fumble was a huge swing in the game, he was also huge part of the Steelers getting back in the game with 3rd qtr TD & they STILL had plenty of time for Ben to have taken them down the field just like 2008.

The big difference between him and 2005 Willie Parker is the 2005 team won the Lombardi.
