1. Backup QB (is picketts to lose … as long as he does acceptable, he has it)
2. Backup RB through #4 RB ( assuming they keep 4)
3. Right Guard… one of three stating positions up for grabs between Green and Dotson
4. 5th and maybe sixth wr/kr… if gunner has a spot in those two then its down to Boykin Nd sims with White and Vaughn as dark horses
5. Starting CB opposite Witherspoon… we all thought Wallace would be it , But Cam Sutton has fended him off thus far…
6. slot cb if Sutton stays outside … tre Norwood is making a case over Maulet
7. Starting Ilb .. Bush or Spillane… the one position they may add to eventually
8. Backup Olb… they have Avery, a guy who isn’t a pass rusher but covers and run stops well, Tuska, a pure special teams ace, Vaughter, a journeyman who rushes the passer well, but isn’t great elsewhere, and Scott, a rawer but more rounded in talent prospect,
9. The last DL… Cam, Alualu, and Ogunjobi as the starters. Adams, wormley, loudermilk, and leal as tge backups… Mondeaux and the Twins all make cases to make it too… if one of those final three shines too much, they miggt have to deal someone to make room or keep an 8th… its stacked though the top end is a bit long in the tooth…
10. The last Cb/DB… last year we broke camp with only 8 DB.. this year we could keep 9… id say 10 if tge other spots weren’t so damn deep. injury hurt tge depth a bit, but it pretty much solidified which safeties we are keeping:
Fitzpatrick, Edmunds, Kazee, and Killebrew

At CB, however its more congested… Witherspoon, Wallace, and Sutton are locks
But then there is Maulet, Norwood, Pierre, Layne, and Steel who at leadt have some merit on the roster ( though Steele feels like a guy they try to slip onto the PS…)

It would not surprise me if they go with fewer ilbs and more dbs this year

I mean there are positions along the Oline and at lb that are easy cuts and keeps… WR, Dl, and CB are really hard. Rb and Qb is more about whether they keep the number from last year or not… Te is just whetger tge better blocker or better pass catcher is #2… there is little doubt tgat 3 make it and which 3 they are… the OL has you wishing for better young options at backup T and G, and both LB positions depth scares the crap out of me…

DBacks:
Witherspoon is #1 CB
Sutton / Wallace is #2 CB
Sutton / Maulet is NCB (maulet had a Strong preseason until injury lately but he is a lock)
Pierre is the 5th CB (outside only)

Minkah is FS (duh)
Edmunds SS
Kazee #1 backup for both FS/SS
Norwood 4th Safety and backup dime backer.

Karl Josephs injury made this an easy choice. Feel bad for him, seemed like a very good dime/ ss option for this season.

9 defensive backs in total

I like it. So killebrew out but Norwood in as a universal db… and special teams ace Bobby Layne is elsewhere. Bubbles aint gonna be happy because I think a bunch of his aces that are bums otherwise aren’t going to make it

Todays ST line up might tell us a lot about killebrew and Layne status.

I think Avery easily gets the OLber nod, first off the bench. I see Layne as an exit stage left.

So pickett will be the backup barring injury almost certainly now.

I dont think Benny Snell did himself any favors, if they keep just 3 rbs, he is in trouble

At Wr Boykin might be beating out Sims.. Boykin is over a million more expensive iirc, but he can play the two outside positions and you cant have 3 pure slot guys i guess. with no injuries, id trade sims if anyone is interested… usually someone needs a slot wr or a returner…

At oline its a mess… they best do a very real honest breakdown of which of these guys are probably going to be better when the new technique isn’t as foreign l, and which just cant hack it… then see if trading a Qb, wr , rb, db, or dl can bring them in a plug and play fix… there is no excuse for the glut of talent at all tgese other positions and tge shitshow along the line… get better scouts if you cant pin down the right guys

On D i am enthralled with the idea of using 3 safeties and 1 ilb against non power run teams and Spillane vs the run teams… at best, Bush is position sound but play deficient… they will keep BJ as a special teams guy, but if they try to stash Robinson on the PS they are nuts

I don’t know how they are going to make tge cuts at DL… man Mondeaux isn’t going to make it to the ps…

At OLB Tuska did marginally ok, and if he is tge special teams ace thats great, but Avery is so vanilla I don’t want him as the primary backup .

Id really look at using Avery as a ilb, trading bush, and bringing in one of tge many low end edge guys available

QB
1. Trubisky 2. Pickett 3. Rudolph
I think this one is straight forward.

RB
1. Najee Harris 2. Jaylen Warren 3. Benny Snell 4. Derek Watt
Warren has asserted himself as both a runner and pass catch. I'm keeping Snell over McFarland for two reasons. First, Snell plays special teams very well and second, if the Steelers need a starter for an extended period of time, I think Snell can fill that roll better than McFarland.

LG
I'm very tempted to look at the options behind Dotson and Green. I had hopes for Green, but he was overpowered again last night and let guys just blow by him. The same exact weaknesses he had last year at center. Dotson hasn't impressed. I'd even consider signing J.C. Tretter to play center and slide Mason Cole to guard.

WR
Johnson, Claypool, Pickens are locks and I believe Austin is as well. Gunner is getting a lot of playing time and I think he's still on the roster. I do like what Vaughns has done in his time. I know Boykin is touted for his special teams play as well. Still a tough call here.

CB
I'm going with Witherspoon and Wallace with Sutton next in line. I have Maulet over Norwood because I think Norwood is settling in at safety.

ILB
I'm starting Spillane over Bush. Robinson is making a very strong case to make the roster.

OLB
They have absolutely nothing behind Watt and Highsmith. Unless something changes I don't see Avery or Tuska getting cut.

DL
Cam, Alualu, Ogunjobi, Wormely, Leal, and Loudermilk are locks. Adams hasn't been available. Mondeaux is a gusty player, just gives up too much against the run.

I think with Spillane you have pass coverage concerns. I am not sure there is a reliable answer between him and Bush.

Maybe Omar can package Rudy and Bush for some help along the OL.
Hoping the Oline can rebound. I kept in mind that the Jacksonville had played more preseason ball. So maybe some element is that and still figuring out how to play together with the new pieces.

I 🤔 I would like a G brought in and kick KG to the curb. I think that is a failed experiment...

Here is an updated though subjective list of the top 100 Free agents available… there are some interesting names at lb/ edge as well as a good amount of offensive tackles that could be explored…

Have to say that I liked Edmunds play at ILB so maybe that package a lot more.........................

Salute the nation

I actually like the idea of moving Edmunds in and playing Kaz at SS.

THIS

My take as well, Edmunds looked pretty good there and wasn't he drafted as a "high bred" type safty/linebacker ?
