Report - Steelers Will Not Give Mike Tomlin An Extension Prior To The 2023 Season

Makes sense! What’s the hurry? He’s under contract through 2024 so why would they rush into an extension now?
I hope the guy leads us to a SB this season although I’ve stated in the past and still hold to that belief that it won’t happen under him. Prove me wrong Tomlin! I’ll be glad to eat the crow.

I find Crow tastes best----------------- BBQ'd

I'm in this near same boat as well. Hope for 20-0 every season.

Salute the nation

My sentiments exactly. Of course, I wouldn't have resigned him after the loss to GB in the SB. Rooney still hasn't called me about this.

For me it’s put up or shut up kinda season for me….500 football is not acceptable

Tomlin is at zero risk of being fired or let go without a new contract. He will get it next year. This may be a warning shot to fix certain coordinator issues NEXT offseason if it doesn't work this year. OR it is a nothingburger and he will get his extension next year no matter what. But, really, it is a nothingburger either way.

If the team is unsuccessful it will ne laid at someone else's feet. Particularly Canada who is s built in excuse. Personally if Canada was retained because of Tomlin his job should be at stake if he fails.

Hell be fine. This thread ought to be a long as Dri Archer's...
Not out of the norm for it to get done next off-season or not? No danger of a Dri equivalent unless Mike comes out that he identifies as a fruit salad.

This is a non story IMO … yes TRADITIONALLY the Steel extended the head coach with 2 years left, but Tomlin’s previous extension was with one season and there was speculation that this was to make sure his contract was closer to Market value at the time the extension kicked in as well as to minimize the amount the Rooneys were liable for if he did leave.

I think if they didn’t extend him next offseason that it’s a big deal.. this is just the new normal with a very tenured coach

I'm glad his contract wasn't extended. An extension is not warranted. All he has proven in recent years is he is average.

Coach Tomlin will decide on his long-term status as the Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers when he is ready to do so...

It's not like it won't happen, it'll just happen next year.

Hopefully it's a warning shot to win a playoff game.
I'm coming around to thinking that Shades' biggest weakness is an inability to hire good coordinators.

Not sure if it an inability to hire them or just not letting them do their job. We had a season and a half of 2yrd passes before they adjusted. We constantlt get torched w/ 2 DL, and often dont seem to go at other teams weaknesses.

Probably a little of both.
I've said before that the two best coordinators Tomlin has had were the only two he didn't hire, LeBeau and Haley.
Everyone else was promoted from position coach and almost every position coach he hires is someone he already knew or worked with.
And lousy assistants and coordinators get to stick around until their contracts expire no matter how bad they suck at their job (although I'm sure some of that is Deuce not wanting to pay people not to work).
I've come to believe that Shades is one of those people who doesn't like change and doesn't like new people.
