He was a pretty damn good fighter....

and a hero of many kids in the 60s and 70s. I remember watching Spinks beat him. I was shocked. how could Ali lose? what a fighter and what a promoter

The first of the Three Pillars of militant civil rights athletes has gone. It's a sad day.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Jim Brown remain. We now live in an age where everything that comes out of an athlete's mouth is PC to the extreme so he can protect his endorsement deals.

Gotta love Sir Charles, Tim Tebow and James Harrison. Right or wrong, at least they've the balls to speak their minds. Truly are in this era.

RIP to the Greatest! He is no longer trapped in his body and can float like a butterfly again.

The OP video shows mostly Ali on the offensive.
His ability to make guys miss was remarkable.

Here his opponent tries to connect 5 or 6 times in a row.

The Greatest.

Soon we segue into a debate on Ali the draft dodger.

I agree. But Ali belittled his own people...calling Joe Frazier a gorilla, which deeply troubled Joe and never forgave him for. Even back then that was crossing the line.

Never said the man was a saint. Many great figures were complicated people. The inside story on Jackie Robinson is much more prickly than the Disney version.

In the same way I respect Rocky Blieir, Roger Staubach, Concrete Charlie and other veterans who served, I respect the men and women who stood up for human rights in a time when it was not popular, even though some of those people were less than perfect.

How about we forget the "colorful" remarks and kindly tribute the G.O.A.T. in the world of boxing???

This is sad news, may his God comfort his family, friends and fans during this time of loss.

That gif looks really irritating. How pissed off was that guy (and his trainer) after that fight. It's one thing to be beaten, something else to be made a fool of.

And Ali was no draft dodger. Trump was a draft dodger. George W. Bush was a draft dodger. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney. Draft dodgers all. These are men who, afraid to fight, ducked their responsibility while politically supporting the war. Muhammad Ali was a conscientious objector. He believed the Vietnam war (and wars in general) to be grossly immoral. But unlike the aforementioned dodgers, he was no coward. He was statistically more likely to be killed in the ring than he would on the cake USO tours he would have been assigned in the Army. He gave up everything he cared about to stand up for his beliefs.

Anyone calling him a "draft dodger" does not know the meaning of the term.
