Interesting read on the Rooney Rule from ESPN article:

http://https://theundefeated.com/features/its-time-for-the-nfl-to-take-the-rooney-rule-seriously-or-get-rid-of-it/

Personally I think the rule should be done away with. What right does the NFL have to pass a rule mandating that any team should have to interview anyone based on race, color, sex, religion...etc. If the Raiders want to hire Gruden, based on past experience, or any other reason, why should they be mandated or shamed for not interviewing a certain race? A persons performance should dictate an interview, not the color of their skin.

Not touching this thread with a ten foot pole other than to ask if it's a spin-off of your "conversation" with Antdrew regarding Tomlin?

Nope, just an interesting article that in essence is shaming the Raiders for not interviewing a minority candidate before essentially hiring Gruden. Again, if a team decides they are replacing one coach with another and already know who they want to hire, why should any team be mandated to interview anybody.

**** the Rooney rule!

Did the owners themselves pass this rule for themselves? If so there is your answer.

The rule was needed decades ago; these days teams hire to win.

The NFL won't be dropping the Rooney Rule anytime soon, but if they did it would be a sign of social progress.

Also, I'm not exactly sure who qualifies for the Rooney rule. Can it be a religious minority too?

Personally, knowing that Raiders want(ed) Gruden, then called me to interview me just to shut people up so they could hire someone else (Gruden), I think I would be more offended than if I had no interview at all.

But then, I am not black, so I can't say how a black person would feel. I just know how it would make me feel.

I agree, but didn't Tomlin knock the Rooney's socks off when it appeared Russ Grimm was the shoe-in replacement? I'd want the chance for experience and that potential to bring something to the table they weren't expecting. Everyone is different, though.

I think the teams need to respect the rule even if they know who they are hiring. There are WAY too many media leaks with hires/fires/etc.

The Undefeated is pretty much a sports themed Black Lives Matter blog that ESPN bought.

The intent of the Rooney Rule was just to make sure that a wider group of people got interviews. Somehow it is now thought it was supposed to be some kind of quota system where X number of minority coaches should be hired every year.

I heard some idiot say that Tomlin was the last time the Rooney Rule actually worked. Because he was the last no name black coach to get a head coaching job. That’s a complete misunderstanding of the rule.

The point is to get more coaches names out there. Also, whenever you get interviewed, you gain experience for your next interview. So, people look at a situation like the Raiders and cry about how it’s going against the Rooney Rule because a minority has no shot and the interview will be a sham. That’s not true.

If the Raiders interview a minority, what happens is that person’s name is then in the air as having been interviewed for a head coaching job. That is a big deal becuase it will lead to more interviews. Also, the candidate will have experience being interviewed and will likely guve a much better interview the next time. In other words, it gives you a practice run for the future, and that has paid off several times.

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard about longtime black and white coaches that don’t get a head coaching job because they suck in the interview.

There have been many black head coaches since the Rooney Rule. What we’ve learned is that black coaches suck at the job too. There’s a reason why the same coaches get hired over and over. It’s because most fail, regardless of race. It really is a huge leap of faith to hire any coach who has never done it before.

If you are a GM and you’ve been there a few years with a losing record and you know that this coaching hire will determine if you get fired or not in a year or so, how big of a risk do you take. Do you hire the young assistant who has never done it, or do you look for a recycled guy like John Fox who may not have won it all but he has been successful?

I guarantee if Marvin Lewis left the Bengals, he would have been hired almost immediately by another team.

THIS is a GREAT POINT. One that I never really thought of.

On the other hand, as a business owner, I should be able to hire the best candidate for the job. If the FIRST guy, girl, black, white, rainbow centaur blows me away, then I should be able to stop there. Why should I have to WASTE my hard earned money / time conducting another interview to meet a stupid rule. Why stop at one? Why not have to interview 2 people from each race and each gender? <sarcasm/>

But, it's the ****** up world that we live in and a sign of the times.

Yinz can argue the rule and might even have valid points.

But the moment it came into effect, it needs to be followed.

And a punishment given out if not followed.

After all it is a rule.

Regardless if all agree or disagree if it should even be one.

I disagree. I think the Rooney Rule is great. I am not some social justice warrior either. It doesn’t force you to hire anybody. The only thing it does is simply force you to interview a minority candidate. I do not think that is a heavy burden.

I also think it is good for the league. I feel that anything that expands the ranks of coaching candidates is a good thing for the league in general.

Interviewing just 1 candidate is stupid, even if you are sure who you will hire. Why waste an opportunity to get to know more coaches? Maybe a guy yiu interview today is your coach 5 years from now because he impressed you and you then followed his career.</sarcasm>

everybody relax...and practice patience with this and any other minority hiring or minority inclusive rule or law...

In just a few more years........ us regular white guys will be able to take advantage of them!

I think if you have your guy as is the case with the Raiders you should be able to apply as an exemption. Its insulting to the people who get interviewed and is a waste of everyones time. However, if you get an exemption then you have to demonstrate due process in the hiring of assistants. And Im just saying this in the framework of the current rule . Not my personal opinion of it.

Quotas for ANY reason are just plain wrong.

Quotas for ANY reason are just plain wrong.
Back in the early '70's the PPD were hiring. Took the civil service, psych, pre-academy etc. tests. They were even giving the 'Nam vets extra points and in the end (not just me) we were told: "you are exactly what we're looking for, but you're the wrong race and the wrong gender!"
I'm not bitter, my life turned out just fine and now I'm retired. I'm of the opinion the Man has a Plan for everyone and when He speaks; shut up and listen.
Quotas blow, the best qualified should get the gig no matter what persuasion or tint of the skin.

This rule is nonsense and should be abandoned. As an owner i interview and hire who I want regardless of race color etc. the rule itself is insulting
