I haven't posted much for a while, and while I appreciate Bennet's belief in his defense as he should: it doesn't mean he has to boast it (let your play determine the reality.)

The Greatest Defense ever for championships, All Pros, Pro Bowls and sheer dominance over time is the Steel Curtain. It's like saying "anyone" is better than Jordan or Greztky.

That being said, even the Steelers Defense of 2000s - playing in this era - went over a decade of finishing in top 10, finishing first in total D 6 times. Seattle is good, but please - you're no different than 1 and done Ravens and Bucs who only managed ONE additional conference championship (1999 NFCCG) game between them with the same core group.

Talking too much and believing your own hype = early playoff exit.

Not. Even. Close... Steelers defense in the year we beat Cardinals in the superbowl was better than their defense.

Where is he getting his stats from? They are good but the best ever? 2000 Ravens? 85 Bears? Heck just pulling up some quick stats shows the 2008 Steeler D held opponents to less yards and points than this years Seattle team has.

Someone please beat them in the playoffs this year....It was a feel good story last year but now they are getting cocky and annoying.

Obviously, just because you play the game, that doesn't make your opinion any better than sandy redshoe's. As said, there are many better than these guys. But the overall absolute bestest everestes, is the STEEL CURtAIN DEFENSE !!!!!!!!!!! Not a doubt or stat to defuse that staement.

Salute the nation

You're absolutely right, not best ever (at least yet), but I loved how they made Manning look last year. Wouldn't mind seeing them do the same to Brady.....if it happens to come down to that. I'd rather see us make him look like crap though.

What a ******* dork.

Harrison won't be in Hall of Fame but only because Joey Porter's production kept him from a long enough career as starter to prevent it. He was as dominant as any LB to ever play -- Defensive MVP in 2008.

Polamalu is a unique 1st Ballot HOF selection no question. The greatest safety in Steelers history and with our D that says something. He belongs in best Steelers Defensive players along side Greene, Ham, Blount and Woodson. Super Bowl 45 would have been a different game if he wasn't playing on one leg - that's a fact. He made game winning or clinching plays 6 times en route to winning Defensive MVP in 2010, so don't tell me he wouldn't have forced a turnover, made a sack or tackle for loss to say nothing of defending passes with that extra step.

Farrior would have been Defensive MVP in 2004 if it weren't his breakout year - losing votes due to question about whether he was as good as he really was yet - an amazing locker room leader who did more than on the field.

Porter was the driving force to motivating the 2005 team to raise their game and bring home Super Bowl XL. His only negative was he was too good to let Harrison take his place! But he definitely was deserving of being on that field - "We Ride"

Hampton, Smith, Kiesel won't make anyone forget the original Steel Curtain of 74 DL. But it was by far best DL since and at their peak perhaps even superior to the 78 or 79 DL....

Taylor never made a Pro Bowl nor was he a real playmaker - aside from INTs in 2005 AFCCG & Super Bowl XL. But he made a career out of shutting down the other teams top WR & preventing big plays - never got the real credit he truly deserved.

Seattle has had a cup of coffee with Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas: let's see how they hold up when they consistently have to play vs. top QBs - see 2008 QBs Steelers beat in 2008 -- instead of the 2 or 3 per year they get away with now

They have a good QB and a very good/ great running back and some good lineman, no name receivers. If they win another SB this February, what would you call them? I'm very reluctant with the term best ever, but no problem with "one of the best" I'd put a couple of the Steelers and Ravens defenses of the last ten years in that category, '86 Bears, 70's Steelers. Don't sell these guys short. They can smother any of these big offenses and that is no small feet.

They very well might not be as good as our '08 squad, but to be fair, they have been rather impressive, especially considering the difference between "great" and "crap" in the NFL is a very fine line, to begin with. But yeah, i dont think theyre the best ever, they still have quite a lot of work to do if they want to get on the level of the Steel Curtain of the 70's

They're not even a pimple on the *** of at least 5-8 years of some of Pittsburgh best defenses. You have to laugh at crap like that. Just a bunch of young guys who need a history lesson.

.... Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha foolish bravado from a moron. They are good, but not even a top 20 all time defense... I wish the average player wasn't a total ignorant buffoon at least when it comes to their own sport...

Give the guy a break guys... I bet he can hardly read... how can you expect him to know anything about history?

seattle gone have the bestesis defense evah

I am pretty sure one set of stats tellz dat story

..........

what a maroon

thier D is not better than our SB XL D, and FSF Lemeuix was better than Gretzky Gretzky piled up stats on beyond loaded Edmonton teams in the early 80's, yes the early 90's Pens were top notch but Mario did not have as much of a loaded team than Gretzky did.

Interesting point about Lemieux.. if you take all the games he missed because of injury and lockouts and multiply them by the point per game pace he was averaging that season, or in the case of missed seasons the average of before and after that season, he crushes Gretzky's records... Don't get me wrong, gretzky was the greatest player in NHL history, but Lemieux was the absolute best physical talent to ever play the game bar none.

In the case of seattle, an era in football lasts about 5 seasons. they are the premier d of this era... but this era's D isn't even on par with the top 5 of the last era, its that different. They simply are the best of a crappy defensive era... that doesn't make them great at all.

In other breaking news ...

Steeltime thinks that Steeltime is the greatest poster ever.

Lemieux may have been better than Wayne if he wasn't beset by injuries, etc.
However - he WASN'T healthy. And bottom line, he didn't win as many Cups, score as many goals, accumulate as many points, etc. Maybe doesn't equate to WHAT WAS.

It goes to same point why Seahawks D isn't in same category as Steelers even of 2000s (to say nothing of Steel Curtain - that goes without saying). The Steelers of recent vintage had a core group was top ten for over a decade; #1 in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008 & 2011 - #2 in 2010 as well. The proof is in success over a long run; not a year or two...

I don't think they are the best ever, either. But...you have to be impressed with what they are accomplishing, especially today. You can't hit the QB high, low, in the chest with your head up apparently, you can't even brush his head with you hand if you are trying to knock the ball down. The receivers are pretty much allowed to catch the ball because it's 15 yards if you try to do anything to break it up. So in this climate they are special.

They are very good. The best going today by a decent margin.

But to put them in a class with the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens or the 70's Steelers is a bit much

The season above has 5 shut outs in it, hard to beat that and they only allowed 138 points. That might be the best ever defense and the team had a lot of injuries that year.

1976 Steelers allowed a total of 9 points over 5 games. I doubt that will ever be repeated or bested.

You can't really compare anymore because the game has changed so drastically in favor if the offense.

There were actually 5 games that they allowed zero points although not in a row. One of my favorite comments from a Steelers defensive player was from John Banaszak who I will paraphrase after the team had scored a safety........ We got this game we're up two nothing in the first quarter, we have em now.
