The 2022 NFL Draft is nearly upon us Steeler Nation, and there hasn’t been this much build up to a draft than there has been this off-season for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Most of the talk and excitement leading up to this year’s draft is around the quarterback position, and rightfully so. The Steelers will be looking to draft a quarterback early, potentially even in round 1, for the first time since they drafted Ben Roethlisberger 11th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft.

The 2022 QB Draft Class is a polarizing one, to say the least, as there isn’t a 100% clear front runner or ranking for the top 5. The class as a whole is also viewed as a weaker group than the past two seasons, as well as weaker than the expected 2023 QB Draft Class. Because of that, who the Steelers select is just as much a debate as it is a debate if they should draft a QB at all this year.

Even with how difficult it has been to rank this year’s QB class, no one should have more information or be better prepared than Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert. Both of them have attended the majority of the top quarterback’s Pro Days, invited them in for a top 30 meeting, as well as even taking some of them out to dinner. If anyone has a feel on the quarterbacks in this year’s draft, it’s these two.

Steeler Nation Podcast: Definitely Drafting a QB Early?

With all that being said, it isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility that the team decides to select not just one, but in fact two quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

As most of Steeler Nation knows, the Steelers almost always carry at least four QBs throughout the summer and into training camp. As their roster stands right now, they only have two on the roster. Those would be free agent addition Mitch Trubisky and 2018 3rd round draft pick, Mason Rudolph.

It would not be unheard of to have a team draft two quarterbacks in the same draft. This happened most recently just a decade ago, and not just once, but twice in the same draft!

In the 2012 NFL Draft, both the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders selected two quarterbacks. The Commanders selected Robert Griffin III with the 2nd overall pick and current Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins in the 3rd round.

The Colts on the other hand actually bookended the draft with their two quarterback picks, selecting Andrew Luck 1st overall as well as crowning Chandler Harnish ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ by making him the final pick of the draft.

Now, fast forward to 2022 and the Steelers may just end up looking to do the same thing. They could very easily end up selecting Malik Willis, Matt Corral, or one of the other top 5 ranked QBs early in the draft. They are actually expected to do so by many people around the NFL.

Adding another QB late is the twist that many people wouldn’t necessarily be expecting, but is a very real possibility given the circumstances.

Similarly to how the top of this QB class is far from a clear picture, the late round prospects don’t offer the most straight forward evaluations either. There are some intriguing names however, including but not limited to Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, South Dakota State’s Chris Oladokun, and Brown’s E.J. Perry.

If, and I want to emphasize the ‘if’ here, the Steelers were to draft two quarterbacks, including one in the later rounds, there is a very good chance that the late round pick would be destined for the Steelers’ practice squad for the start of the 2022 NFL season. That wouldn’t necessarily mean the pick is wasted however, as the team has only one quarterback on the roster right now in 2023 and that is Trubisky.

There is no doubt that the Steelers selecting one QB in this year’s draft is a healthy debate among Steeler Nation. But if the team decides to select two QBs, it will drive Steeler Nation crazy with their initial reactions.

Unless they pick up extra picks in a trade down, I’d be surprised to see this happen.

Hmmmmm. And here I was thinking that they better draft 2 players in their secondary or I could have a mini meltdown. Or Wide Receiver. As usual I am wrong when it’s draft related🤓

What if we drafted all the quarterbacks so no other teams would have one.

Lol. The responses here.

But seriously. Why?

LOL. We need a franchise reset. Tomlin has overstayed his welcome. Will probably be one of the worst drafts ever. LOL WTF no OL no DBs. SERIOUSLY 2 QBs. Let's put 2 FBs and 2 QBs on the field at the same time that'll confuse the **** out of em. Let's have a Y formation . As in Y da **** do we not have a new coaching staff. HOPEFULLY SOON ENOUGH. I'd like to see another superbowl win before I pass.
