Murder mystery - what brought down the Russian plane over Egypt?

Egyptian and international experts have begun their investigation into why a Russian airliner carrying 224 people crashed in the north of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all on board. What will be their main lines of inquiry?

Technical fault?

Egypt's prime minister has said a technical fault was the most likely cause of the disaster, but that it would be up to the air accident investigators "to prove or deny this".

Egypt's civil aviation minister Hossam Kamal said there had been no sign of any problems on board the flight, contradicting earlier reports that the pilot had asked to make an emergency landing after experiencing technical problems.

In Russia, the widow of the plane's co-pilot, Sergei Trukhachev, told NTV her husband had complained the plane's condition "left much to be desired" during a telephone call before the flight left Sharm el-Sheikh.

But the Kogalymavia airline has insisted the 18-year-old plane was fully airworthy, and Mr Kamal said that "there were no reports that the airplane had faults,
the checks done before take-off did not reveal anything".

Kogalymavia has said "external factors" were behind the crash - meaning the airline believes it was not a technical fault.

According to the Aviation Safety Network
, the plane sustained a tail strike - when a plane's tail hits the runway - while landing in Cairo in 2001. That took three months to repair.

The botched repair of a tail strike caused Japan Airlines Flight 123 to crash in 1985, the worst single-aircraft accident in history, in which 520 of 524 on board were killed.

But Kogalymavia officials said that the plane was repaired completely after the 2001 incident, and this could not have had an effect on its safety.

Human error?

The airline has said that the pilot - who reports identified as Valery Nemov - had more than 12,000 hours of flying experience, including 3,860 hours in A321s. Kogalymavia says it has ruled out "any mistake by the crew."

But the aircraft's "black boxes" - the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR), both of which have been found - will provide investigators with detail on the last minutes of the flight and tell them whether any actions taken by the flight crew caused or contributed to the crash - which happened during fine weather.

Officials have reportedly said that the "black boxes" are in good condition.

The CVR records the voices of the pilots and other sounds from the cockpit. It retains two hours of recording - on longer flights, the latest data is recorded over the oldest.

The FDR records technical flight data, including at least five basic sets of information: pressure altitude, air speed, heading, acceleration and microphone keying (the time radio transmissions were made by the crew).

Both recorders are designed to withstand a massive impact and a fire reaching temperatures of up to 1,100C for 60 minutes.

Shot down by missile?

Security experts have poured scorn on claims from jihadis allied to the Islamic State (IS) group, who are active in the Sinai area, that they downed Flight KGL9268, but examinations of the aircraft wreckage and debris field will enable investigators to definitively pronounce on this theory.

A senior Russian aviation official has confirmed that the plane broke up in mid-air. But Viktor Sorochenko said it was too early to draw conclusions about the causes of the disaster from that fact.

The jet was cruising well above the maximum range of any surface-to-air missile that the jihadists are thought to possess. These are far less powerful than the vehicle-borne Buk system that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine last year.

Experts have also questioned the logic of why Islamic State's Sinai affiliate would risk inviting a massive international retaliation by such an action when its battle is primarily with the Egyptian state.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says that with Russia fighting a war against IS in Syria, and Egypt's fragile economy in desperate need of tourists, both countries will be hoping this has nothing to do with terrorism.

Bomb on board?

Egyptian PM Sherif Ismail (r) has dismissed claims from Islamic State that it was responsible Analysing the aircraft's black boxes will help investigators determine what caused it to suddenly plummet from the sky.

No hard evidence has emerged to suggest that a bomb on board the plane caused the crash - and there are questions about how a would-be bomber would evade heightened security measures around Sharm el-Sheikh airport - but one expert told the BBC that descriptions of the wreckage indicate that such an event remains a possibility.

Professor Michael Clarke, director general of the Royal United Services Institute think-tank, said: "Early reports said that [the aircraft] split into two and that suggests a catastrophic failure, not a mechanical failure, but that suggests perhaps an explosion on board.

"So I'd be much more inclined to think if we have to guess at this stage, it's much more likely to have been a bomb on board rather than a missile fired from the ground."

Again, analysis of the main wreckage site and the debris field will enable investigators to evaluate this theory.

In that part of the world your thoughts will immediately go to terrorism, of course any theory is pure speculation at this point.

Probably going to de the result of a mechanical problem. They usually know pretty quick if it was a bomb or pilot error.

Possibly sabotage prior to take off.

Ok, it was according to CNN, but that would just cause a fight cause they're the libtards media Establishment I guess?

Were most of those killed on board Russians Citizens or Arabs?

Found it in the new. Almost all Russians, including 25 children:

If ISIS did this to an American jet flying from Cairo to New York and it had 200 Americans on it with 25 kids...... We'd have boots on the ground in less than a week.

We need to operate more like Israel. Find out who did it, and drone the **** out of them. And drone their families as well.
Leave smoldering ruins.

Not likely. How long did it take us to respond to 9/11.

Now it is time to see how tough / crazy Putin is.

What I do not understand is Putin is using ISIS as an excuse to bomb rebels in Syria and maybe hit an ISIS target here and there. Why would ISIS bring down a Russian plane and risk facing the full wrath of Russia and possible somewhat unite the USA and Russia.

We wouldn't do not one ******* thing. Bomma would get in front of cameras with his damn pen and draw another line in the sand and blame Bush, the Republicans and ask for compassion to be given to those who shot down or blew up the airplane. Afterall, one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter.

Because they're stupid ***** who like to kill people.
I have a cousin from Italy who lives in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt right now. I told her today on FB that I pray for her safety every day. She has assured me in the past that Sharm is fine and there is a large Italian community there, she and another lady just opened a gelato shoppe, but then **** like this happens.

Obama still trying to protect his Muslim Brotherhood comrades

Putin Prepares To “Unleash Hell” Upon ISIS Forces After Airline Bombing Attack

Earlier today the Obama White House attempted to downplay any links to ISIS in relation to the recent Russian airline disaster that took place shortly after Metrojet Flight 9268 took off from Egypt last week on its way back to Russia, killing everyone on board.

For days British officials have quietly suggested foul play while U.S. officials were noticeably tight-lipped. Now some within American intelligence are voicing very similar thoughts to their British counterparts, despite the Obama White House's apparent desire that no official statement on the matter be made.

As for Russia's Vladimir Putin, he is said to be at this very moment reviewing a myriad of counter-measure options, all of them intending to unleash hell in the form of powerful military-based retribution the likes of which ISIS militants have yet to have faced.

Putin is said to have already initiated warnings to various Middle East nations of his intent while ignoring the Obama White House, though some have suggested Russian intelligence officials have been in contact with Pentagon officials directly as a sign of professional courtesy.

Apparently it is Barack Obama himself Mr. Putin has no use and even less regard, for.

One D.C. Whispers source went so far as to suggest part of the Obama administration's hesitation to make public statements regarding the Russian airline tragedy is based upon concerns there is a Muslim Brotherhood connection and that measures are being taken by administration officials to make certain no such connection, if in fact it exists, will become part of the investigation.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a radical and highly influential Islamic group with strong ties to the Obama White House.

meanwhile Prince Harry flies over here to meet with the "giddy" Obama and visit injured troops.
of course, Bomma will fly from Chicago to the White House to meet Prince Harry, but ... **** the troops.

I can't believe that you actually believe that.

Not with this leader in the WH.

Like to know what "Break-Up" occurred prior to crashing. Black Box info is quite important here.

I'd list Terrorism high on the suspect list until the data is analyzed and points elsewhere.

One would think ISIS would have little to gain and a lot to lose in tangling with Putin in this way. Barry's buddies should hunker down for the time being, just in case.

Black boxes show bomb brought down Russian jet

European investigators who analyzed the two flight recorders from the Metrojet plane that went down last weekend in Egypt are categorically saying the crash is not an accident, CNN affiliate France 2 reported Friday.

The investigators said the cockpit voice recorder of Metrojet Flight 9268 shows an explosion and the flight data recorder confirms the explosion is not accidental -- there is no sign of mechanical malfunction during the initial part of the flight, France 2 reported.

Everything is fine during the first 24 minutes, then in a fraction of a second there is a blackout and no more cockpit conversation, convincing investigators there was a bomb on board, according to France 2.

ISIS is an existential threat to Syria. The Russians are, and will continue to bomb ISIS. They are already at war with each other. This plane bombing is merely another act of war.
Other than having the same foe, how do you suggest Russia and the Us will be "united"?
