JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Stop if you heard this before: The Steelers' offense was a dominating force, their defense couldn't stop much of anything and the result was a loss to a bad team.

Guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Steelers' record-breaking offense, intact for the first time this preseason, was flawless in their only drive of Friday's preseason game against the Jaguars that lasted six plays and resulted in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Martavis Bryant.

Still, that was overshadowed by a shaky defensive showing — mostly with the first team still in the game — in a 23-21 loss to a Jaguars' team that won three games a year ago.

Shaky isn't even the word for it.

poor Butler, wait till he finds out his schemes don't mean a thing without playmakers

Remember Casey Hampton? Boy do we miss him. 2 years and we've not found anyone close to replacing him. No wonder the defense is so weak. You can't run a 3-4 with the D line getting blown back into the secondary on runs, and they can't move an O-line an inch.

Most of the vets were out of the game after the first series. First series the defense held Jax to a FG. Kinda misleading to imply that Jax's scoring happened "mostly with the first team still in the game". But, gloom and doom sells newspapers/gets page views.

this

Key members of the D playing little.

No scheming as well.

Not to say the D will transform overnight.

I expect them to gradually get better.

I just hope in the process with the difficult schedule, they don't lose adjusting.

Especially with Bell out the first two games.

Wouldn't be shocked if it was 1 and 1 upon his return.

You guys are blind homers, did you even watch the game? - the first string D looked pathetic - If Bortles didn't throw like Landry he would have had 2 more TD's, at least.

Shamarko played almost the whole game - he was a complete zero when he wasn't getting burned.

35 points or bust! - It's all on Ben to keep us in games

Jags were bailed out by two cheap penalties on their final scoring drive when we had them stopped. Getting sick of the refs bailing out teams who would otherwise be stopped dead in their tracks.

Did they mention special teams?

Why oh why is Wing and his stupid 30 yd reverse spin punts still on the team?

and surely we can find a punter with a leg somewhere that can double duty to kick the ball into the EZ on kickoffs

Jags kickers effortlessly booted the ball through the EZ while we couldn't get it to the goalline - these guys are gonna get gashed all year if this keeps up

Problem with the defense is they still don't look like they can stop the run. Jacksonville's first two drives netted 30 yards on seven carries and only two of those runs were held to under four yards. It's one thing if they were going up against a stud back, but we are talking about guys like Robinson and Gerhart. A long way to go before the start of the season, but the Steelers all but said they need the run defense to be good this year to be successful.

Of course the best part of all

No injuries - I was holding my breath every time Bell touched the ball

Are special teams would have problems with the special Olympics.

#blameBen...he is the problem...the offense scores too fast...the defense can't rest...#blameBen
write it down, you'll be hearing it on radio and reading it on forums in a few weeks

anybody posts that **** here I'll stab them in the head with an icepick 30 or 40 times

that'll put a stop to it

I still think this defense is going to struggle against the run. I think pass defense will improve especially if there is any sort of pass rush.

The first game and last night, I saw a lot of gaps for the Jag's running back to navigate through. Hopefully, this will get fixed before the games actually matter. I think McCullers could make a difference in first down run stopping.

The thing is, its up to the Offense to put up points and make the other O one dimensional. That will help the D the most

big ban is key to stuffing the run, Cam thomas need to go but it does not seem LD has enough to push him overboard, sucks that Geathers got hurt after 1st cuts hopefully we can pick up a good rotational run clogger

Geathers wasn't going to beat Thomas out for a spot on the depth chart.

Per coach cool shades not much game planning going on yet, vanilla sets on both sides of the ball. Didn't get to see the game but from highlights and what I've read all 3 1st teams performed similar to last year. The game i will be watching the most closely is vs Buffalo in 2 weeks. The next to last pre-season game most starters usually play a half or so and its considered a dress rehearsal for the real deal. That game should show us more accurately what kind of team we have this year.

I look forward to our secondary stopping Aaron Rogers on NFL Network on Sunday

and maybe seeing if our DL can stop Eddie Lacy

I'm sure most teams aren't game planning on either side of the ball. So our vanilla defense can't stop a vanilla offense... a bad vanilla offense that isn't good even when it's not vanilla.

I feel like I must have missed something. Didn't our first string defense hold their offense to 3 pts before a majority of the vets were pulled? And isn't it a little early to say that the Jax offense will be the same level of suck that it was last year? I mean Bortles is in his second year and unlike Landry Jones, some QBs actually progress.

You must have missed the wide open TD's by their receivers that were dropped...Bortles and Landry have a lot in common

an easy 2 TD's in the first half if you actually watched the game

Wait, I really am missing something. They get points for drops now? Because if they don't, then what matters to me is did they actually score a TD (or two) against the starters? If the answer is no (and I know it is because I "actually watched the game") then they were held to the 3 pts I thought they were.

You however must have been watching another game entirely, in another universe where drops and missed opportunities count as ... let's call them "participation scores"

I know what I saw...a good QB would have made those throws.

If you think this defense is gonna be some kind of great you must be drinking the kool-aid

Well now, that's changing the parameters isn't it. Did I SAY they were great? Did I SAY that I thought they would be great? With this offense, if they are just somewhere a little north of average on defense I like their chances. My apologies for not standing outside the stadium with a sign announcing that " the sky is falling" after one series in a preseason game. That lemonade that they serve at the doom and gloom club must be real bitter.
