After another year of great Black Friday and future Cyber Monday deals, it is a good idea to look back at some great deals that the Pittsburgh Steelers gathered during this past offseason. With quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in one of his final years at the helm of the Steelers offense, it was imperative to get him one of the best teams in years. As a result, the team went out and took some big swings in the draft, free agency, and with trades.
An article by Bleacher Report‘s Brent Sobelski, he went through all 32 NFL teams’ best offseason acquisitions and when it came to the Steelers, he had an interesting take. There were a couple of options that I would have chosen to make this list that are different than what the writer ended up choosing. My first choice would have to be Najee Harris, the rookie running back from Alabama. In a year where the Steelers passing offense has seemed to struggle at points in the season, the team is currently 18th in passing yards and 28th in rushing yards, which definitely does not support my argument. With that being said, Harris is not only the best rookie running back, he is currently 7th in the NFL in rushing yards, 3rd in attempts, and 12th in touchdowns. While the team’s rushing attack isn’t too powerful, Harris is the only bright side of it, especially as a rookie.
When it comes to Bleacher Report‘s pick, they chose linebacker Joe Schobert, who came over in a trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 6th-round draft pick in 2022. So far this year, the Steelers best linebacker not named T.J. Watt has been Schobert who leads the team with 67 total tackles as well as 4 pass defenses and one forced fumble. With many people upset with how other linebacker Devin Bush has played, Schobert has been able to make up for the lack of production by Bush. This is definitely why he has been the best acquisition on the defensive side of the football this season.
One of the biggest reasons why I believe Schobert was chosen was due to his availability. This is not to say that Harris has not been available, but there has been many injuries on the defensive side and it is super important for there to be a solid and consistent defender in the middle of the field. With Schobert in the lineup, the middle of the field is pretty locked down.
