It was a Sunday afternoon game on October 26th, 2014. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts were set for primetime kickoff on CBS at 4:25pm ET. Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers would don the famous, or infamous to some, ‘bumblebee’ uniforms. The Colts were riding a 5-game win streak since losing their first two games of 2014.
The Colts would receive the opening kickoff, and Andrew Luck and company would jump all over the Steelers defense. It took the Colts three plays before they were deep into Pittsburgh territory. Cornerback Brice McCain gave up a 45-yard pass to TY Hilton to set the Colts up at the Steelers 20. The Steelers defense would bend, but wouldn’t break and stopped the Colts offense on third down from the 13. Adam Vinatieri would kick a 31-yard field goal and they’d take their only lead of the game, 3-0.
From there, Roethlisberger would get his hands on the ball for the first time and by the time the game would be over, he’d be on fire. On his first drive of the game, he’d conduct a 9-play, 80-yard drive that would end in a Markus Wheaton touchdown pass from 18-yards out. Roethlisberger would be 5/5 for 63 yards on that drive. 7-3 Pittsburgh.

On the ensuing drive, the Colts would quickly go 3-and-out and the Steelers were in business again. Le’Veon Bell would gain 16 yards on the first three plays of the drive rushing, and after his first incompletion of the game, Roethlisberger would connect with Bell, Heath Miller, and two straight to Lance Moore. Just like that, the Steelers had first and goal at the Colts 8. Two plays later, Roethlisberger would connect with Martavis Bryant for a 5-yard touchdown. 14-3 Pittsburgh.

Things wouldn’t get better for Luck and his Colts on their next possession. On the first play, Luck would try to force one into Hakeem Nicks, but instead, William Gay would intercept it and return it 33-yards for the touchdown. 21-3 Pittsburgh.

So with 14:16 left in the second quarter, the Colts were well out of it. But they wouldn’t quit. Luck would get some help from a defensive holding on a third down to keep the drive going. From there, he’d find Donte Moncrief for 52-yards, and the Colts would score a touchdown two plays later. Luck would hit tight end Dwayne Allen for a 21-yard touchdown pass that was reviewed and upheld by the officials. That would cut the Pittsburgh lead to 21-10.
That was more yards than Moncrief had his entire time with the Steelers, right? (Answer? He had 18 total yards as a Steeler)
Benjamin Todd Roethlisberger just couldn’t be stopped, though. He would throw his 3rd, and 4th touchdown of the half on the next two Steelers possessions. He would find Antonio Brown for touchdown passes of 47, and 8 yards. It was 35-10 Steelers with 5:21 still remaining in the second quarter!
After the game, Colts cornerback Darius Butler would say it all.
The Colts would take over after the second Brown touchdown, and they would easily score a touchdown. So somehow this second quarter would continue and the Steelers would get the ball again. This time, the Colts would stop Pittsburgh just shy of field goal range, and they’d block the attempted pooch punt from Roethlisberger. Luck would hit Hilton for a 39 yard pass, and a Luck scramble would put the Colts in field goal range. They would answer the back to back touchdowns from Pittsburgh and make it 35-20 at half.
The Steelers were just non-stop though. Again, Roethlisberger would connect for a touchdown pass to Bryant for his fifth of the game. The drive was highlighted by a 49-yard completion to Miller that put them on the Colts 4. 42-20, Steelers led at the beginning of the third quarter. For the first time all game, neither team would score on their next possessions. The Colts would tack on another touchdown as the third quarter was winding down. Ahmed Bradshaw would find a seam up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown. 42-27.
Remarkably for as well as the Steelers had played, they only had a 2-score lead after scoring 42 points. And disaster would strike the Steelers. Darrius Heyward-Bey would cough up the ball after a 16-yard reception and the Colts would recover. Again Moncrief would toast the Steelers. This time for a 31-yard touchdown and it was an 8-point game…and it was still the third quarter!

On the next drive, the Steelers would chunk their way down the field into Colts territory. On first down and 10 from the Colts 11-yard line, Roethlisberger would hand off to LeGarrette Blount. Blount would gain 6 yards before he’d fumble. The Colts would recover it, and they’d have a chance to tie. On the second play of the ensuing drive, Luck would be called for intentional grounding in the end zone, which results in a safety. Pittsburgh would get a much needed 2 points. It was 44-34 now.
After the Pat McAfee free kick, Roethlisberger and the Steelers would take over from their 33-yard line. Intent to run the clock down, they would conduct a 13-play drive eating up 7 minutes and 10 seconds of game clock. They’d cap it off with Roethlisberger’s 6th touchdown pass of the night. 51-34 Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger would finish the game a ridiculous 40 for 49 with 522 yards and 6…count ’em 6 touchdowns! Oh, did I mention the next week he’d go on to throw 6 MORE touchdowns. Just a ridiculous two weeks for Big Ben. The following week, the Steelers would put up 43 points to beat the Baltimore Ravens. Two weeks, 12 touchdowns, 0 interceptions. I miss him already.
