The Pittsburgh Steelers sent 5 players into the Hall of Fame this past August, and they hope to continue sending more in next summer. The Hall of Fame selection committee announced today 122 modern era players that would be up for consideration for the Class of 2022.

Hines Ward, who has been knocking on the door of getting in for a few seasons is back on the list, with Casey Hampton, Heath Miller, Gary Anderson, and Hardy Nickerson Sr.

Nickerson is mostly remembered for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he spent 10 seasons, winning the Super Bowl in 2002. But his career started in Pittsburgh in 1987 when he was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round. He started 61 games for the Steelers racking up 9.5 sacks, and 5 forced fumbles.

Getting into the Hall of Fame as a kicker has been difficult for most, but Anderson certainly has the credentials to be enshrined. Anderson left the Steelers before the 1995 season after 13 years with the team, and continued to play for 10 more years. He was the Steelers all time leading scorer at the time of his departure.

Hampton was an unsung hero of the Steelers defenses of the 2000s. Coming as a first round pick from Texas, Hampton lived up to his draft status anchoring the line for 11 seasons. He finished his career with 9 sacks from the nose tackle position, and 398 tackles. His big bodied frame was the perfect fit for the Steelers 3-4 scheme. His ability to occupy lineman allowed his linebackers to feast on opposing quarterbacks.

When Ben Roethisberger needed a big first down, you best believe he looked for Miller. Miller destroyed all of the Steelers tight end reception records and was a critical piece in two Super Bowl victories. He was the often forgotten all-around tight end in an era of speedy down the field receiving tight ends. He was a punishing blocker, but with the softest hands. If the ball was near him, he was going to catch it. You wouldn’t confuse his speed with some of the more modern tight ends, but he once had an 87-yard touchdown reception.

Ward has advanced to the semi-finalist bracket for the last four years, but a log jam of Steelers and other receivers has kept him on the outside looking in. Ward shattered all of the Steelers records put in place by Hall of Famer John Stallworth. He was the definition of what it was to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. If he wasn’t catching passes he was breaking opponents wills by blocking them into the ground.

All of these players are very well deserving.

Hopefully it will be another black and gold party in Canton, Ohio in August of 2022.

Only see Hines making it out of that group, but unfortunately for him I think it will be at the end of his eligibility or as a veteran's nominee.
Hines will make it in the next few years. He's a Super Bowl MVP and broke two other Steelers Hall of Famers receiving records. Oh, and they named a hitting rule after him...a WR that hits too hard...lol.

gary anderson has a shot... should.
Will be tough. Morten Andersen and Jan Stenerud are the only pure kickers in at this point. Vinatieri will most likely get in fairly early. I think Gary will have to wait awhile as they just don't care too much about kickers.

Sorry, Adam Venateri will get in DUE to his cheating franchise's opportunity.

Sorry Adam but even though you didn't do the cheating you have benifitted from it.

Heath deserves it big time. He was acknowledged by many other teams as a huge weapon.

Totally agree, he was the COMPLETE TE / teammate / franchise compatable / sportsmanship and I already have his jersey !!!!!

So here is my predictions on likelihood of getting in for each

1 Hardy Nickerson… yeah, blasphemy for ranking him over Ward…. Still the guy had his best years and biggest impact away from the Steelers in Tamps’s 4-3… he doesn’t show up on a lot of tackles lists because they started officially recording those in 94…. But the year before he was credited with a whopping 214 combined tackles… and for his career counting the unofficial ones, he had over 1500 tackles…

because he isn’t really thought of as a Steeler by the National media, he probably has an easier path in

2. Hines Ward… the guy was the best all around football player at wr in his era… guys had flashier stats, but he put up hall worthy stats for that era while spending his first six seasons playing in a run first offense with kordell, kent, and maddox tossing him the ball. … who knows how many of the Steelers rushing yards he personally accounted for, and his blocking is legendary…

He might not get in this year, or next, but eventually he makes it this decade

3. Gary Anderson… and i say this knowing that he has a real shot of never getting in… Anderson was the 2nd best kicker of his time… which was over 20 years… Vinitari gets in when he is eligible… but Anderson retired with the best fg % of 80’s kickers back… he is third in most categories behind Adam V and Morten Andersen.. its really hard to get in as a specialist… and modern kickers have it easier so their percentages are up… plus his biggest highlight is missing the kick that ended a perfect season from him and lost a shot at the superbowl for his team

it would surprise me if he got in before the vet committee, but it would not surprise me if he got in at all

4. Casey Hampton. There hasn’t been a superior true NT i have seen over big snack… he wont get in until the vet committee, but I truly think he goes in someday… I don’t believe reporters are well versed enough to understand his technical superiority… and will penalize him as a two down player…

5 Heath miller… my favorite te of all time… great all around te, but I don’t see how he makes the HOF… he will have to settle for being the best all around TE in Steelers history

Hines Ward? They changed the rules because of him. Which I still find hilarious they're trying to protect defensive players from offensive players.

He should already be in. Miss seeing Hines play. I got to see a guy playing offense and defense at a high level for many years.
