Tuesday afternoon, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin addressed the media again prior to the upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
He kicked off his press conference stating that he appreciated the effort in all three phases (offense, defense and special teams) in the game against the Tennessee Titans, especially the defense (red zone and turnover play specifically). He noted that the offense struggled to move the ball at times, but most importantly, they took care of the football.
The Steelers however struggled in their punt game and coverage last Sunday, and ESPN‘s Brooke Pryor asked coach Tomlin about punter, Pressley Harvin III. He continues to have an inconsistent rookie season and it appears he may be experiencing some off-the-field issues as well that may be effecting his play on the field. Tomlin responded:
As far as injuries go, Steelers tight end, Pat Freiermuth is in the concussion protocol again. Tomlin stated that the depth behind him if he can’t go on Sunday is “in-house if he’s not available.” Defensive lineman, Chris Wormley didn’t finish the game on Sunday against the Titans with a groin injury and will be further looked at this week as well.
Some good news coming from the offensive line, offensive guard, Kevin Dotson will practice this week and his 21-day window to be activated from IR will likely happen this week. Offensive lineman J.C. Hassenauer is also working his way back this week too.
Before the conference ended, coach Tomlin spoke about the seven-game win streak the Kansas City Chiefs are currently on. He highlighted the talents of NFL MVP quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and the run-after-catch ability of Pro Bowl tight end, Travis Kelce. When asked about the speed of wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman, coach Tomlin joked and smiled stating that he hoped to at least “minimize” their efforts, versus trying to stop them completely — which is almost and impossible task.
Tomlin noted that the Steelers haven’t played well on the road this season, but he’s loved what he’s seen from Steelers’ starting All-Pro safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick. Guys like Fitzpatrick’s secondary counterpart, cornerback Joe Haden, and others who are a little banged up heading into Sunday will continue to be on a pitch count. Tomlin stated that practice on Wednesday will most likely be a little “lighter” than most Wednesdays to preserve the players’ bodies this week.

Coach Mike Tomlin on injuries:
Pat Freiermuth – in the concussion protocol which will be the guide
Chris Wormley – groin – being aggressive in treatment
Isaiah Buggs – still dealing with ankle
Hassenauer and Dotson working their way back.
