The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be in the market for a cornerback once the new league year starts, and they could be interested in going back to Kansas City like they did in 2019.

The Steelers signed Steven Nelson away from the Chiefs by giving him the largest free agent contract in team history. A three year deal worth 25.5 million was the cost, and the Steelers will have to top that this off-season if they’d like to acquire any of the top free agents on the market. Ward will reportedly demand a contract in the range of 35 million over 3 seasons.

One of the top corners hitting the market is Chiefs starter Charvarius Ward. Coincidentally Ward is the corner that replaced Nelson when he headed to Pittsburgh. Ward is coming off his best season as a Pro with 67 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 10 pass break ups.

He’s young, and has size at 6’1. He is a willing participant in defending the run, and has the ability to make plays on the football.

The Steelers got an up close look at Ward twice this season. During the regular season game Ward intercepted Ben Roethlisberger, and had a tackle for a loss. In the playoffs he recorded 6 tackles, and a pass break up.

Pro Football Focus rated Ward as the Chiefs most improved player in 2022.

PFF Grade change from 2020 to 2021: 64.3 → 71.2 (+6.9)

Ward was picked on more in 2021 than in any other season of his career — he was targeted on 17.9% of his coverage snaps, the 14th-highest rate among NFL corners. Despite that, Ward held his own and recorded a career-high PFF grade. He generated 0.37 PFF WAR, which ranked 16th among NFL corners and was over seventh-tenths more than his previous career-best.

Regarding free agents, Marpet the 28 year old pro bowl guard from Tampa suddenly retired. Can't see the Bucs letting Jensen go now and they just gained some valuable cap space.

35 million for 3 years for CB..Man that's an insane amount....After all the salaries are totaled up where the hell does it actually come from?...I know tickets and beer prices are high but damn...

Whether Haden stays or NOT, we need a quality CB. If Haden is gone I could see this happening but if Haden stays then I see a much cheaper version coming.

Could draft a HIGH pick CB as well pending on direction of FA they go.

He's a lot cheaper than Jackson would be. Less than $12 million per instead of almost $20 million per for your No. 1 starter sounds like a bargain.

It is insane. I assume that’s where the tv deals really kick in on the salaries 🤷🏻‍♂️

yeah, because they have been so good at drafting CB’s in the last 15 years.
It's because player development is this team's strong point

I hear and sentiment what both of you are saying but the team doesn't let past FEAR determin how they draft. Maybe we get lucky and find a player that is good enough that his developeent happens, regardless of the Tomlinization, similar to TJ or even Minka to an extent.(i know we didn't draft him but he was very young).

They have new eyes on the defensive side to scout better , this is a deep class at the CB position and I hope they draft one between the 2nd and 3rd round.
