His experience is going to be missed. Losing Flores & Mitchell is tough, but no fear as AUSTIN is still here.

Flores would have made a GREAT assistant HC and that would have been a move up……….

I think highly of Mitchell, but he was no longer DL coach and never rose to DC. I think he was a loyal and respected foot soldier. Certainly part of the culture. Day to day won't be a difficult fill.

Hats off to you coach. Well done! Enjoy your family and retirement.

Great football career. God Bless!

He was an assistant Head Coach. You would think Tomlin would at least look outside to fill his position. I'm still slightly hopeful they backfill his position and bring in someone on the offensive side as well.

Thank you for your service to the Black and Gold, Coach Mitchell!

Again not crapping on anything. He was a long time great coach. I think the Dline was in better hands when he was in charge. However, I think Assistant head coach is more like a consigliere and ceremonial position. Culture of the team guy. And in a way you cannot replace that. However, the DC, the OC are the jobs where the rubber meets the road.

Well, I hope at the age of 71 that he didn't wait too long to enjoy a long peaceful retirement.
If he did he went out doing something he was passionate about right? I hope when I go I am doing something I love.

True but our OC definitely needs help and the Steelers should be prepared to can him in-season this year. They absolutely should have brought in someone but being OK is OK with Tomlin and Rooney.

I would imagine Lefty or Hamilton gets a job. If not I grab one of them for sure. Special assistant of cleaning up Canada's and by proxy Tomlin's mess.

Mitchell had a terrific coaching career with the Steelers. I know he moved to a different role later in his career and wasn't quite as involved with the day-to-day operations of the defense and team as he was, but this is still a loss. Tomlin has some work to do to fill out his staff with assistants.

Enjoy retirement coach. Long time of service and never a peep of controversy. I would love to sit and listen to him talk football. That man has forgotten more than most people ever know I’m sure.

We made him assistant head coach to prevent him from leaving a long time ago… the only reason he didn’t ever get a head coaching gig was he really wasn’t interested in an nfl gig as far as I’ve ever heard… Back in the cowher days I read that he used to coach for Bear Bryant and really was hoping to coach at Alabama, but never got the opportunity because they chase name brands…

he is the last of the cowher era coaches left… If youve ever heard any of our DLinemen talk about him, he is a huge reason for their success…

This IMO, is maybe the biggest assistant coach loss since DLB … it’s going to be like how our RBs dipped in development after Dick hoak left for good… you don’t easily replace that kind of knowledge base

The last of Cowher’s people. It’s 100% Shades’ team now.

So now we can hold him accountable? So, it's NOT Cowher's players / coaches holding him back now, ........... RIGHT?
