Steelers make trade for CB

How hurt is our no 2 pick

Or how hurt/messed up in the head is Allen?

I read Allen picked off Ben in the red zone. I know it's one play but I'd gather this has more to do with lack of depth in dime and nickel.

This is a really good trade for us, I believe.. eagles fans aren't happy about it so I'll take it. We needed a veteran who can play at that spot

This is all about Golson and not Allen. Golson will be useless this year if he misses another week or two of camp. Boykin has one year on his contract left and I doubt we will pay him unless they can get a good deal done now. If no deal, he will be a stop gap for a year until the rookies can practice and get some playing time.

Smart move - they finally realized we have nobody at CB

Iggle fans are not too happy that Chip gave him away. I'm not familiar with him, but he is a former 4th rounder from Georgia, so he should be very healthy competition and even win a spot on the 53 man roster. I like the pro-active approach to fill a need.

Trade has nothing to do with Allen..who has been pretty good so far. Had a rough first day against Brown but that's a tall order for anyone.

.

Boykin is a fantastic pickup. He is only 25 and has been a top-3 slot corner over the last few years. He has expressed his desire to play on the outside as well...we'll see. Yet for sure, we have a serious player who has played A LOT in the slot.

The Eagles have done a MAJOR overhaul of their defensive backfield. My guess is that they want 2nd round draft pick Eric Rowe to play in the slot. He is tall, long and physical--I really liked him. DC Billy Davis seems to prefer a Safety type player in the slot. So there you go. IMO... we get a good player at a great price. However, I believe he has only a year left on his rookie deal. Hopefully, we can sign him at a reasonable price. Although not a big player... 5'10" and 190... he is very physical and elite athletic ability. VERY good in zone coverage.

This guy is a great fit, IMHO.

Not sure how you get that. Allen's pretty "good" days in practice isn't enough for the FO to totally disregard all last year. Also Boykin wants to play outside. That was one of the reasons why he was bitching about Kelly last year.

If anybody has ever listened to the guy you'll know that he knows how good he is. He's going to want paid if he plays well this year.

Because I think they will give Allen a very long rope..to me this trade had to do with depth and Golson not being able to contribute early similar to Bryant last year.

Wait ... This guy's Combine Profile at NFL.Com has him listed at 5'9" .... Wasn't the concern about Golson that he was only ... 5'9"?

3 year slot starter who was traded because the coach thought he was an inch too small and who wanted a shot on the outside... I will take this trade everyday. most 5th rounders don't even make the team. Kind of feels like Kelly is making changes for change sake cross the state in loserville...

But he has a 3 year track record of being able to play in the NFL... which is overlooked by people when they see measurables they don't like...

Might offer something in the return game as well, great pick up

Oh, I didn't say that I didn't like the trade or the potential fit. My point was that the Golson pick was jumped on because the kid was "too short" before he even had a chance to play a down in the NFL. You wouldn't have known Boykin would become one of the best slot CBs in the game if he wasn't given a chance just because of an inch.

And honestly, I get the feeling if he were 5'10" he would still be an eagle..... some coaches love the measureables and have a template of what they want in their heads... which is why some guys fall through the cracks despite obvious actual gametime talent

I'll speculate that Golson may be on the extended IR or even season IR given this move. There were reports his injury was more significant than indicated.

Sounds like a good move to me. Boykin can compete for a starting job and maybe it is him and Allen with Gay shifting to the nickel and Blake as the No. 4.

From the article:

Prior to making the trade Saturday, the Steelers had a lot of question marks in their secondary. For starters, Cortez Allen is coming off a dismal 2014 season and has yet to prove that he can be a dependable cornerback on a week to week basis. On top of that, while he has had his moments, cornerback Antwon Blake has also shown that he has a ways to go in his development.

Depending on how Allen and Blake do during the preseason, he could very well be a starter in the regular season opener against the pats***.

This move was made because Allen was bad last year and there is nobody behind him. I'm sure Golson figures into it but to think they traded for this guy because a rookie was hurt over a month before the season starts is a stretch. Nobody even knows if Golson can play in the NFL at all.

Also if he plays a certain amount of snaps it becomes a 4th round pick.

.

He measured in at 5'10" (OK, well 5'9 7/8") at the combine in 2012. Kelly and Davis want to run an in-your-grill defense... bigger physical Corners up close on Receivers. Boykin is NOT that guy. The Eagles wanted to dump his 1.5 mil contract. At the very least, he is a very solid player in the slot. In addition, maybe he pushes Allen and Gay. He certainly provides veteran play on the outside in the event of an injury. This is a win all the way around.

The move kills two or three birds with one stone:
1) Insurance in case Allen is still a head case
2) Strengthens the defensive backfield even if Allen has a bounce back year. Anyone remember the initial feeling when Taylor crapped out and Allen went bonkers and we had to turn to McCain and Blake?
3) Definitely no need to rush Golson back now and no need to rush him into the lineup

Gay isn't chopped liver. Best DB last year. Like I said because of the money Allen will get a long look. We have no depth. You can state this trade was made with Allen in mind. And I won't argue but I still think it was a depth move. And not tied to Allen directly
