Always seem to hurt the Steelers. Pats returner misplayed the booming PH first punt. I realized immediately it wasn't a safety. He didn't take it into the endzone with possession. But why is it touchback and the 20. It's reasonable to assume the ball could have been downed. The ball should come to the point he touched it. On a side note Pierre should have had a play on that or smashed him out of the way.

That hopefully gets rule changed eventually.

He gained control of that ball in the endzone and was tackled. Should have been a safety, but hoodie.

It's not a safety. You have to purposely move the ball in the endzone. Either by running it in or snapping it. But I also do not think it should be a touchback.

He touched the ball, which made it a live ball. He then possessed it in the end zone and touched down by contact which makes it a touchback

If he didn't touch it and it goes into the endzone it's not a live ball and is considered a touchback

If he was standing in the endzone and caught the ball, it's a touchback with a dead ball unless he advances the football forward. This is the same scenario as the first.

If the live ball rolls out of bounds or through the back of the endzone it is a safety.

So, punting is all about field position and really doesn't allow for scoring unless the Steelers had recovered the muff in the endzone of kicked/pushed it out of bound. The NFL could increase scoring by allowing the live ball to be recovered in the endzone by the receiving team for a safety as well.

You can fumble a ball into the end zone for a safety… I don’t get why they call a muff differently… it hit the ground, right? I know there are weird rules about not being able to catch the ball in the air off a muff for the kicking team, but once its on the ground its treated differently…

It looked to me that he caught it in the endzone, and started to move. That makes it a live situation, and he was tackled.

Saftey.

That goes down as my second least favorite punt muff rule… years ago our gunner was closing in on a punt returner and tge guy muffed it right into his arms… but because he caught it in the air and didn’t let it hit the ground ( again it was batted right to him) it was a foul for interference with a fair catch… because again it didn’t hit the ground first…

so in theory, if a returner accidentally bats a ball he was trying to fair catch ten yards upfield and its caught by the other team… somehow that is interfering with a fair catch

The ruling was it was all a continuation of the fair catch process… so once he got it, it was dead

I didn't think of that. Sucks.

If he fair catches it where he was they are inside the 10 maybe the five. He screwed up and was rewarded with the 20. Maybe they should have gave Gunner the 40 on his gaffee.

I'm unsure about the rule in question. But is there another rule that says the Steelers can't throw the ball further than 5 yards downfield?

It's called the "Canada Rule."

Obviously

A team shouldn't get rewarded for screwing up a play. That's what happened in this particular instance.
