Why do they insist on having Archer return kickoffs, which he does poorly, but not punts? If he can get the same 10 yards returning punts that he gets on kickoffs, it's all good because then he's 10 yards upfield instead of being tackled on the 10. I know AB is good at returning punts but it makes me nervous having our best WR doing that.

because you don't understand football, that's why

I haven't been able to watch a Steelers game on HD in a while (mostly on my computer because of where I live).

When I saw Archer last night he looked SMALL. Jesus, I know 14 year old running backs bigger than him.

The first time he has a lane to run thru will be the first time. Whether its him or Blount(the few times he has ran it back) there hasnt been lane yet. Blocking has played a big part too.

We can't get a return out past the 20. ******* returners blow

as antdrew said, it's really not the returners. We could have AB back there, or even Dante Hall or Marshall Faulk. There's simply not any blocking going on to open lanes. Escorting the defensive guys to the ballcarrier is working wonders, though.

Archer trying to bounce that one to the outside last night was even more dumb than him bringing all those kickoffs out against Cleveland. You can't go east and west on a kick off return, whether the blocking is great or not, you have to turn it up field.

Im not sure could be wrong but maybe thats how it was set up. Most returns are orchestrated. Its not just blind running I dont think. But i could be wrong. Blount's return was on a short kick and he still was tackled at the 14. Thats not good blocking.

He is tiny...and easily arm tackled too. They need to give him a dump off pass so he can have some open field. Lining him up deep, and then not blocking for him is only wasting his speed.

There are simply no lanes. Blount has shown in New England he is a very competent and capable returner. There is potential for Archer. The games I have been to or have watched HD, the return team blockers just down get adequate blocking. They few that Archer has had a descent return have been called back by holding calls and blocks in the back.

There is no way you design a return to go from one side of the field, to the complete opposite side of the field. It was simply Archer trying to turn a corner that never got there. He ran the entire width of the field for two yards. Running east and west on kick off returns is only going to allow the other team to get more bodies on you.

We had one designed to do just that and it worked well, it was a few years ago do not recall when but it resulted in a great lane being set up. I think it was the last decent return I remember.

I believe that was Sanders for some reason up the Steeler sideline at Heinz

Don't forget who our idiot head coach is, he is stupid enough to waste a 3rd round pic on the midget and stupid enough to design a full field east west play on a kickoff.

Now I'm putting the over/under for this thread at 10 pages. Or maybe 100. ;)

Run for the sideline Dri! before you get snapped in half!

How F'in hard can special teams be to coach? Bobby Love did a great job and he seems to be the last good special teams coach, that my memory can remember, that we've had. I know Bill Cowher was a special teams coach and probably had his hand in, but I can't seem to remember a specific good one. I know it helps to have good talented players, but are we really this bad?

Last really good coach I remember was Bobby April, who seems to have been a good coach on every team he has been on that played us as well. Not sure why we let him get away.

OOOppppsssss my bad, I meant Booby APRIL !!!!! But really, why is it so hard to find a ST coach??? Bobby use to get the throw aways and who ever Cowher didn't want, turned em into a ******* machine. Hell Norm Johnson fought of the germans when they bombed Pearl Harbor, and still had time to make the tackle or on sides kick. ****, RUN / BLOCK / TACKLE, basic football, yet to hard for football players and a coach to do.!!!!!!

If I laughed my *** off at this, am I going to hell too?

Man, that's funny in an appropriate sort of way when talking about Archer.

One of our biggest issues with the low return average other than the obvious lack of blocks being set is that whoever is back there tries to take it out even when moving laterally 8 yards deep in the end zone. You can't set up blocks when your eyes aren't up the field. Couple that with poor blocking and no lanes and ya get a pathetic 17.5 yard average. How come our coaches don't coach us out of this problem? Simple fix if they're paying any attention.
