Now the draft can happen, because the best mock ever is finished. After waiting as long as i could for breaking news and consulting several almanacs, a wayward sherpa who was banned from Everest after testing positive for portobello mushrooms, and Johnny Manziel's liver for last minute inside tips, here it is, in all it's glory.
1 Los Angeles (from Tennessee)
Jared Goff QB Cal - seems to be a done deal to go with the local kid
2 Philadelphia (from Cleveland)
Carson Wentz QB North Dakota State - Sam Bradford is a loser. Good for the eagles to recognize that and make the big move to get a QB.
3 San Diego
Laremy Tunsil OT Mississippi - Their OL is garbage. OT is thin in the draft so OT is the best pick here. They may try to trade back into the teens where they can still get a quality OT. Tunsil is athletically superior to the other LTs and SD has to go against Von Miller so i think stying put and taking Tunsil is the right move.
4 Dallas
Joey Bosa DE Ohio State - Dallas needs pass rush badly. Bosa is the best fit. He has some off field issues but nothing bad enough to scare the Cowboys. Ramsey is a consideration but he may be a better Safety and they drafted Byron Jones 1st last year. They are similar. I can see them going with the Rb Elliott but they have had chances to pay for free agent RBs and did not. They still seem to believe their OL is good enough that they can get by with an average RB.
5 Jacksonville
Jalen Ramsey CB Florida State - i think Myles Jack should be the pick here because he is such a special and unique player who can help vs the run and pass. But the Jags lost last year's 1st rounder Dante Fowler to injury and they invested a ton this year. Jobs are on the line and this is the make or break year so i think Jack's injury scares off the Jags and they take the safe pick Ramsey.
6 Baltimore
Ronnie Stanley OT Notre Dame - Eugene Monroe is banged up and unlreiable. The ravens offense is based on power run. They need to upgrade the OL. Ramsey is a consideration but they can get a DB in Rd 2, they can't get an OT anywhere near Stanley in RD 2.
7 San Francisco
Deforest Buckner DE Oregon - Chip Kelly drafts another Oregon guy but this time it makes sense as he's both the best player and biggest need
8 Cleveland (from Philadelphia and Miami)
Jack Conklin OT Michigan State - Browns seem to be in full rebuild mode with moneyball guys at the helm. The Rb Elliott could go here but i have a feeling the draft for the browns is about building the core of the team and they will add the skill guys next year.
9 Tampa Bay
Vernon Hargreaves CB Florida - They have need at CB and Hargreaves is the best fit and a local guy doesn't hurt either.
10 New York Giants
Myles Jack LB UCLA - this is a bit risky because he is coming back from injury but this guy is the best talent in this draft. He was Pac 12 freshman of the year at RB! and also LB. He can be a true impact player vs the run and pass. Giants LBs have sucked for years. Jack would be the kind of athlete they haven't had since LT.
11 Chicago
Leonard Floyd OLB Georgia - the Bears need a pass rusher for their 3-4 and Floyd has a high ceiling as a possible Von Miller type rusher.
12 Oakland *****TRADE (From New Orleans) TRADE *****
Ezekiel Elliott RB Ohio State - Saints are telling anybody who will listen that they love QB Paxton Lynch but that seems like a ploy to try to get somebody to trade up with them. Since picks 13 to 18 are all set at QB, it seems any team wanting Lynch would only have to get ahead of Buffalo, who is the first team, other than Cleveland at 8, that may take a QB. With Elliott on the board, they get a call from Oakland who wants to jump Miami to get Elliott. Oakland has other needs but they are also floating the idea of moving to Vegas and this move for a splashy player is the Raiders style.
13 Miami (from Philadelphia)
Eli Apple CB Ohio State - with Elliott off the board, they turn to CB and get the best athlete available.
14 New Orleans (from Oakland)
Sheldon Rankins DT Louisville - Saints need defensive help badly especially on DL. With the death of Will Smith, they need an impact DL and Rankins is the most disruptive DL available. They trade back, add some picks and still get their guy.
15 Tennessee (from Los Angeles)
Taylor Decker OT Ohio State - they need to protect Mariotta and Decker could give them those bookend tackles along with first pick from 2014 Taylor Lewan. With those 2, they could have OT all sewn up. The rest of the draft will probably focus on defense.
16 Detroit
Jarran Reed NT Alabama - Detroit needs to help that defense with a run stopper. I can see Darron Lee as the pick here but Detroit has shown that they value DT pretty highly over the past few years.
17 Atlanta
Darron Lee LB Ohio State - that makes 5 buckeyes so far. Not surprising for the best team in the nation to have so many picks. I considered a pass rusher like Lawson here, but with DL being so deep, i think Detroit goes for the athlete Lee here because they can get a run stuffer later but won't find a LB with Lee's cover skills.
18 Indianapolis
Shaq Lawson OLB Clemson - they need a pass rusher after whiffing on Bjoern Werner a few years ago. I also considered Center Ryan Kelly here but i can't see taking a C when there is a pass rusher available and such a need.
19 Buffalo
Emmanual Ogbah DE Oklahoma St - The defense slipped last year because the DL fell apart. Mario Williams played like a bum. I considered Nkemdiche here but he is more of an inside rusher and i think Rex will want the outside guy with upside. Ogbah can play inside on passing downs. This may be considered a bit of a reach but Ogbah has some big upside and Rex is a gambler.
20 New York Jets
Paxton Lynch QB Memphis - Jets really need a QB. Fitzpatrick is a stop gap and they seem unwilling to meet his price. Chan Gailey is the OC and he is a great teacher for QBs. He got the max out of Neil O'Donnell and Kordell.
21 Washington Redskins
A'Shawn Robinson DT Alabama - Redshins have trouble stopping the run and Robinson can give them some versatility as NT or DE in the Redskins 3-4 scheme.
22 Houston
Corey Coleman WR Baylor - the defense is good. They replaced the fragile vegan Arian Foster with Lamar Miller at RB. They gave big money to Osweiler. DeAndre hopkins is a stud but needs help. Last year they drafted Jaelen Strong is a big physical WR. Now they add the outside speedster to open things up.
23 Minnesota
Laquan Treadwell WR Ole Miss - This seems like the most natural fit of the entire first round. They need to get the offense going. Mike Wallace failed and Cordarell Patterson is apparently retarded and can't do anything but kicks. Doctson could be the guy here as he's faster but Treadwell is a physical WR who fits in the cold weather NFC North. He is a good fit with the small, quick Stefon Diggs
24 Cincinnati
Josh Doctson Wr TCU - this seems a no brainer as well with the Bengals letting Sanu and Marvin Jones leave. But that's why i pause a bit. They let them leave, so i can see DL being the pick here. If Doctson is available, he will be too good to pass up considering the depth at DL that can be had later.
25 Pittsburgh
William Jackson III CB Houston - If the draft played out this way, the steelers would have a tough choice. Jackson, Billings, Spence, Karl Joseph, and even OT Jason Spriggs still on the board. Steelers have their choice of which position they want to upgrade. This would be a prime situation to trade down a few if possible.
Personally, i would take Spence in this scenario. I feel Jarvis is a backup and pass rush is the biggest need. Spence is a natural for a 3-4 OLB and could give the steelers a scary pair with Dupree. But based on the pre draft visit lists, it does not seem the steelers share my view that OLB is a priority.
That means the steelers will be choosing between Jackson, Billings and Joseph. I know they love all 3. DL is so deep that i think they will pass on Billings because they can get a good player later. Besides, whatever DL they pick here is a likely backup this year. And in the future, a guy liek Billings would still be a semi backup as NT and rotational DE to give Tuitt and Heyward a rest. A first rounder seems a large investment for that.
I feel the pick will be a debate between Jackson and Karl Joseph S West VA. In the past, they have valued Safeties over CB, so Joseph would have been the no brainer. But now they seem to be looking at things a bit differently. Joseph has some injury and durability concerns and that may be the deciding factor. Also, Robert Golden Is OK as a starter if the CBs are upgraded and maybe Doran Grant will be transitioned to S.
26 Seattle
Robert Nkemdiche DT Ole Miss - Seattle's OL is a mess but an OT is a reach here and it's a bit high for OG when there are good pass rushers available. Nkemdiche will upgrade the rush up the middle.
27 Green Bay
Reggie Ragland MLB Alabama - Ragland is probably their dream pick. he allows them to move Clay Matthews back to OLB where he belongs so this is like getting 2 picks in 1.
28 Kansas City
Noah Spence OLB Eastern Kentucky - not long ago they were deep at OLB with Hali, Houston and Dee Ford, but now Houston may miss the year, Hali is getting old, and Ford has not been great so OLB is a need and Spence lands in their lap.
29 Cleveland ******TRADE (from Arizona)******
Connor Cook QB Michigan State - Cleveland has shown lots of interest in Cook. They have plenty of ammo to move up a few spots. Arizona could be looking to deal because they do not have a 2nd round pick.
30 Carolina
Artie Burns CB Miami - seemed like WR would be the pick but then they created a hole at CB by letting Norman leave.
31 Denver
Christian Hackenberg QB Penn State - This is a placeholder pick as i think somebody trades up to get him here. If you watch Hack's freshman film in the Bill O'Brien offense, you see him doing a lot of things that are staples of the Kubiak offense, tons of roll out play fakes. Denver may pick him unless they trade for Kaepernick or Bradford. This could also be a prime spot for a trade up for Hack. With Cook off the board, that list of QBs is getting short and the Cowboys and 49ers are coming up soon. I have a feeling some team trades up here for a QB.
