The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced they have re-signed strong safety Terrell Edmunds to what will be a one-year, $2.5 million dollar contract that will keep him in Pittsburgh for at least the 2022-2023 season. After hearing much speculation about Tryann Mathieu potentially suiting up for the black and gold next season, the Steelers countered the speculation by re-singing their 2018 first round pick to be their “22nd starter” as General Manager Kevin Colbert made so clear. Although Steeler Nation has been asking for a Mathieu signing announcement ever since the rumors started, the overall consciousness is a happy one now that Edmunds is back with the Steelers, even if it is just for the one sole year.
I think this is the best case scenario for both sides. Expectations have been high ever since he was selected with the Steelers’ 28th overall pick back in the first round in 2018 and he is coming off what was his best overall season yet as a Steeler in 2021. What I mean by overall is that he had his hand in not only in the rush defense aspect of things, but also did his part in the secondary as well. Although not a career high, Edmunds posted 89 total tackles (105 total in 2019), adding one sack, two interceptions and six pass deflections to his season’s resume. Having a Pro Bowl safety in Minkah Fitzpatrick on the opposite side of you obviously helps, but it was nice to see Edmunds have success in what would have been his final contract year.

Although the Steelers originally turned down Edmunds’ fifth-year option for this upcoming season, the organization apparently had plans on bringing him back into the mix once it all was said and done. Colbert was vocal in his pre-draft press conference on Monday about how the team was “open and honest” to Edmunds regarding the situation and was happy to see the deal get done with only a few days left until the NFL Draft. That being said, Colbert did add that nothing the team did would potentially make him shy away from making a particular move in the draft, so is it safe to say that nobody’s starting spot is safe?
I do think that is the case for Edmunds. Obviously, unless the team is able to land a top tier defender in the secondary, he will be the team’s starting strong safety once Week 1 is upon us. This should be looked at as another opportunity for Edmunds to prove his worth with not only the Steelers organization, but for all other 31 NFL teams as well. Edmunds will still be in search of a long-term contract once the 2022-2023 season officially ends and although he did receive some interest from a few AFC teams this off-season (Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins), there is no other opportunity at his particular position that is better than Edmunds’ situation in the NFL.
He is on a top 10 defense, being opposite a First Team All-Pro in Fitzpatrick, pairing that with being behind one of the best overall defensive line groups in all of the NFL. The front office has done a good job of upgrading the defense through free agency and could continue to do so during this Thursday’s NFL Draft. Obviously, we will all know a lot more about the Steelers’ plans with their depth chart once this weekend ends, but as of now, Steeler Nation can only hope Edmunds takes this opportunity and runs with it, or he may not get another in the black and gold.
