I'm rewatching the game now.

Man, Broderick really got screwed on the face mask call. Yes, his hand is on the face mask but SLOW THE PLAY DOWN - he does NOT aggressively tug, yank or pull the face mask. What I see/saw was him trying to get his hand down and the finger get caught as he's pulling it down.

My problem with the call was it was facemask not hands to face. I've seen many oline yank and tug on a face mask endlessly and not get a 15 yarder. The call killed the drive.
Exactly!!! Either way results in 'no TD' but I think 'hands to the face' has less of a yardage penalty??? Let me do a Cooch and go ask Walter Football...

I thought it was an iffy call when I saw it. Yeah not down on Jones as much as some are.

I can 100% understand why the call was made. When you watch at real speed, you can see the defender's head get turned to the right a bit. Not a terrible call.

I agree. Exactly what I thought during the game.

His hand was there, face-mask called. I want Broderick Jones to succeed, but can’t look for free be’s along the way.

No problem with the refs calling it...simply saw that type of grab not called in the past.

This officiating crew didn’t let anything slide. They called it very much by the book. Other crews are more tolerable and not as flag happy. Not these guys though. They were dropping flags against both teams especially the Giants all night.

The crew was pretty tight. Don't think we can complain about the refs much this game. The giants had 5 penalties on one drive. JPJ could have been called for a PI, and Moon could have had a roughing the kicker call. Moon was blocked, but it looked like he also made at effort to dive at the punter so i think it could have been called. That no call could have won the game for us.

It was a minor facemask but a penalty either way. Gotta clean that type of stuff up if he is going to live up to his draft status.
I usually don't make posts this thorough but here goes.

After watching Jones for a season and a half I have a new theory. He was drafted as much or more for his sheer physical size as his ability. He got away with it at Georgia because you can at college. But if you read his scouting reports he had many many short comings listed. Most of the media and board members here had him as a sure fire opening day starter, partly because of Jones being a first round pick but mostly because of our utter disgust with Moore’s play. But Tomlin said no such thing. He was extremely patient out of the gate.

Last season about midway he took over from Chuks who played his way out of starting RT and this season out of the league. We drafted another T , Fautanu first round. He jumped Jones and earned starting RT. We also drafted Frazier who was our starting C game 1. Both did an outstanding job until injury . Another rookie, McCormick has filled in admirably for Frazier. Jones was also thrust into duty at RT. Meanwhile Dan Moore has done a decent job at LT.

Jones is still extremely young, fairly inexperienced including college and learning a new position. Like I said before he is a physical specimen with a lot of flaws. Tackle is a difficult position as you’re on an island alone. I know I haven’t been the most patient. I think we all need to be and let the staff coach him up. I know that part will give some a good laugh, but they’ve done just that for 3 others this season.

I'm not sure why they made the rule change that every facemask call has to be a 15-yard personal foul. The one on Jones seemed to be less egregious than most. There should be a difference between tackling a guy by his facemask and an innocuous play like this one.

Yes this…
That was an old school non personal foul five yard face mask infraction.

That would fit me, I thought the STEELERS draft team & media couldn't be wrong.

McCormick is playing RG for the injured James Danial.

Ryan McCollum is playing C for the injured Zack Frazier

Broderic Jones is playing LT for injured Fautanu, otherwise he would be bench warmer. He definitely needs to heal up and get the get go !!!!

Dan Moore has played LT for 4 years and I have to say, he has done OK (solid B) so far, this season.

There were about four or five 5-yarders called last Friday night -- they still do it right at the high school football level.

Thanks for the corrections.

I don't think the Steelers draft team has been wrong. Like I said looking back from day 1 there was no indication that Dan Moore was going anywhere and no indication Jones was starting out of the gate. The media on the other hand....

Ramon Foster was also extremely cautious about calling Jones a starter immediately. Even though he doesn't cover the Steelers directly he has a great take about what's going on from past experience. I'm sure he still has inside connections too.

Since we're focusing on Broderick on this thread...

If you have the time and you've saved the game to watch it again - I've finally got to the last play of the 3rd quarter. Guess who was responsible for the key block to allow Russ to hit Jefferson deep on the right side of the field???

None other than, Broderick Jones.

So, for me, the jury is still out but he's not going to supplant Troy at RT. Perhaps swing tackle is in his future???

He is the RT of the future. They cannot pay Moore market value with two 1st rounders. Moore hits market. He's not great but he us strong snd powerful and his technique will improve.

I agree with Jones. When he was drafted it was for his potentially huge upside. Sure it would have been nice if everything clicked right away. Lack of games in College, switching to new position and a few nagging injuries slows down the development. Fortunately we are 6-2 and he gets to keep on developing. I think he’ll be just fine, and will even be much more productive in the second half. Saw several nice blocks last game.
