Who gets the most snap count at the TE position…………………………

Obviously Muth is the #1, but between Heyward / Gentry / Washington, who gets the most snaps.

The article has a very good write up about each and perceived pecking order.

Gentry seems to be the common sense man out but wait……. There is more. Last year Gentry was vastly improved in his role as blocker-occasional catcher.

Good read and thanks STEELERNATION.COM for the article.

Washington is the clear TE2 based on his draft status and potential. It's his to lose. Plus I think we can count on Muth missing 2-3 games due to injury. Hayward is a gadget guy and Gentry is the odd man out.

TEs typically take longer to acclimate than other positions because they typically have key blocks and key routes and if they mess up it can result in real bad things… I would be surprised if Washington is 2TE on the depth charts before midseason and honestly if he doesn’t get there all year that would not be unusual…

And Heyward is an HBack utility guy… he can play the Te position but he mostly is going to fill Watts role from last year. Between FB and Hback- Te, i think he will be in about 10-12% of Offensive plays.

Gentry will start the year as TE2. He may well finish it there too, but next year he will not be back

I think it is a matter of what you are looking for in different matchups. Against those good pass rushing teams you ideally hope Washington is up to the task. You want to max protect. Plus you probably will run more in those situations and against weak run blocking teams. At other times you can mix in Heyward when you want to pass more and Gentry as blocking rotation. The key is Washington....and how quickly he progresses.

Washington is going to provide more value in the running game than passing game this season.
Before his next contact...he will be a left tackle.

I think you possibly do that to a TE that isn't pass catching capable. Washington should be able to do it all. Not so sure I entertain moving him.

Actually he’s not. He needs to make the transition from college to pro and the TE position is one of the hardest to do that in. History shows most rookie TEs don’t make near an impact.

The hard part is he has to learn the equivalent of two positions,…. The run and the pass.

Gentry has the experience to make it tough on the rookie.

I see Washington making some small noise, but not to start the season.

I see Gentry and Washington both in on some downs. Muth on the sidelines twittering his thumbs. I’d course were talking “run” downs.

He won’t be replacing our LT. Maybe RT ?

I guess we'll see who's right come this fall.

That's probably true...

I really think his future is at tackle after watching this guy block, especially with his ability to move his feet/quickness out of his stance when his hand is on the ground..

I only said that be cause we got our coveted LT in this year’s draft.

I can’t predict Washington or Jone’s ceilings but if they are battling it out at the end of their rookie contracts,………… that would be a welcomed problem.

Doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong. How about we just enjoy and see how it plays out. I just want the BEST player on the field……….. Geeeesch

Do you remeber Eric Green (TE) and how good he was. Washington has similar size, but not sure on speed.
