It’s kind of odd when you experience a tie. You don’t know quite how to feel. You understand winning, and this isn’t winning. You also understand losing, and want it to be a loss, but it isn’t. So what does it mean to tie a football game? It means the Pittsburgh Steelers start off the tie break procedures with an ace in the hole!

The NFL tie break procedures are pretty in depth and can sometimes be confusing when it comes to the last few games of the season. According to NFL.com, these are the current tie breaks needed to make the playoffs:

  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  5. Strength of victory.
  6. Strength of schedule.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  9. Best net points in common games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss

Now those are a lot of steps, but with a tie, your team has a leg up vs any other team with the same number of wins. No need to check the head to head, or win/loss percentages, strength of victory or schedule. That tie means our team has the tie-break automatically. Same number of wins? You’re in!

Although some of you may feel that the game was like “kissing your sister,” don’t be tied down with the negatives. The Steelers may have just earned the ultimate tie-break to enter the playoffs!

Oh brother, time for some gum..

Omar nailed it. lol. This is a **** team that isn't going to even going to sniff the playoffs let alone be in the discussion for playoff contenders. They tied the shittiest team in football and looked just as bad as Detroit in that game.

Basically last week we went up .5 of a win on the rest of the division, and yes it makes tiebreakers very unlikely to matter to us now…

It was still a waste of an easy win at home and that matters more than figuring out tiebreakers at seasons end

How did the Ravens look against miami… how did the Browns, who just kicked tge bengals ***, look against a meh patriots squad? We tied a ****** team in a icy rainstorm with a metric ton of injuries and only because we fumbled three times at the end of the game killing drives

ALL games are needed wins but if you can't win the next best thing is a TIE.

Coyuld we be the first team ever with a TIE to win the Super Bowl ???

Ravens should have lost to Detroit. Buf lost to JAX. TB lost to WASH. There is not one dominant team in the NFL.

What you listed aren't reasons, they're excuses. The lions had to play in the same conditions, they had key injuries as well, and neither team played worth a ****. The Steelers just aren't that good of a team right now. "But if we hadn't fumbled three times..." yeah, it's called failure to secure the ball. That's what bad teams do.

The darling Rams just lost to a beat up and nad sf team after being virtually crowned super bowl favorites

and the nfl is chalk full of mediocrity this year… there aren’t any juggernauts… good teams routinely lose to bad teams … its just tge state of the league

As of right now we have the top wild card spot… we control our own destiny… doesn’t mean we are making the playoffs but every team behind us has had a worse season. Yes that game was an embarrassment… but the injuries mattered, the weather mattered… its not like we got curb stomped here.. we couldn’t finish a couple drives in the red zone and fumbled a bunch in ot

I'm sure the 8-8-1 Steelers will take great comfort in that when the 9-8 [insert team name here] goes to the playoffs.

That tie was a needed win. Because the rest of this schedule will be trying to say the least.
I think (once Ben is back) the schedule, while quite difficult, is a better measuring stick for him and the team. The Chiefs don't really scare me and neither do the Ravens - we beat them twice last year and I see nothing less than split results this year.

We're one up on the Turds and need to beat the Bengals on that last game.

Imagine if the refs didn't alter the momentum we had in the GB game??? Can't cry over spilt milk - just play the teams that are on the schedule...

Amen. Thread closed!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - want some milk w/ your pissy attitude and cornflakes??? The Lions had their starting QB, albeit hurt, and lost their star RB. Rudy ran our offense and it's not the same production level as when Ben is on the field - true or false? We lost Joe Haden early and thankfully Pierre didn't get exposed. We lost TJ Watt for a whole quarter and in overtime. I'll say that again - we lost TJ Watt for TWO QUARTERS - and still held the Lions to 16 points.

The offense gave up 3 apple turnovers and the defense was LAMBASTED when the Lions ran the ball.

We were lucky to win that game - had they had a mediocre kicker - we would have lost.

I'll take the tie all day considering the circumstances...

There are zero dominant teams in football this year. Still anyone's Lombardi!

The league has got what it wants (even if a little assisted by thier hand) in getting parody amongst the teams. FF dream world because you never know who will step up (assisted or not) in a particular week. Last second FGs & OT keep viewers thus justifying the TV contracts.

My employee is a Chiefs fan and he was ready to write the off and I said wait a minute, it just takes a spark and they are right back in it. Look at our Beloved STEELERS, as poorley as they seem to have played they would still be in the play offs today and at that point anything can happen.

Until we are proven out or done and even then I'll be rooting tooting and following this STEELERS team to the end.

We did play with our backup QB. What's the league record with backups starting??

I think that's part of the Steelers issue. They were basically the same team w/or w/out Ben at QB. They struggled to generate offense, and at times, that offense was confusing and lacked any adjustment needed. None of that is new, but it is consistent.
